About The Position

The Head Swim Coach is responsible for developing and implementing a comprehensive swim team program, coaching and mentoring athletes, and fostering a positive team culture.

Requirements

  • Minimum age of 18.
  • Excellent leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills.
  • Strong knowledge of competitive swimming techniques, training methods, and swim team operations.
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in swim coaching or aquatics management, with demonstrated expertise in coaching competitive swimmers.
  • Certifications required within 60 days of employment: CPR, First Aid, AED, Oxygen.
  • Ability to complete the following within 30 days of hire: Child Abuse Prevention training; Bloodborne Pathogens and Sexual Harassment training.
  • Passion for the YMCA mission and commitment to serving the community.
  • Must be able to perform all physical requirements of the position, including walking, standing, bending, reaching, and lifting up to 50 lbs. at a time.
  • Practices are held: May 11-28= Monday thru Thursday, 5:30-6:30 pm; June 1-28= 7:00-9:00 am.
  • Meets held Monday & Thursday evenings.
  • Must have transportation to Monday/Thursday swim meets.

Nice To Haves

  • Certified USA Swimming Coach preferred, or willingness to obtain certification.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and implement a progressive and inclusive swim team program that aligns with the YMCA’s mission, values, and goals.
  • Establish goals, objectives, and performance standards for the swim team and create a strategic plan for achieving them.
  • Provide expert coaching and instruction to swimmers of all ages and skill levels.
  • Develop individualized training plans and workout routines to help athletes reach their full potential in competitive swimming.
  • Foster a supportive and encouraging environment that promotes personal growth, sportsmanship, and teamwork.
  • Plan, organize, and lead swim team practices, including dryland training, technique drills, and interval sets.
  • Conduct skill assessments and performance evaluations to track swimmers’ progress and identify areas or improvement.
  • Adapt training plans as needed to address individual strengths and weaknesses.
  • Coordinate swim team competitions, including meets, tournaments, and championships.
  • Register swimmers for events, organize travel arrangements, and provide coaching support during competitions.
  • Analyze meet results and provide feedback to swimmers to facilitate continuous improvement.
  • Recruit, train, and supervise assistant coaches, volunteers, and support staff to assist with swim team activities.
  • Provide leadership, guidance, and mentorship to coaching staff to ensure consistency in coaching methods and practices.
  • Conduct regular staff meetings and training sessions to communicate expectations and share best practices.
  • Communicate regularly with parents and guardians of swim team members to provide program updates, schedule changes, and performance feedback.
  • Foster positive relationships with parent sand encourage their involvement and support in the swim team program.
  • Manage administrative tasks related to the swim team program, including budgeting, scheduling, registration, and record-keeping.
  • Maintain accurate and up-to-date participant records, attendance logs, and performance data.
  • Prepare reports and presentations for management and stakeholders as needed.
