About The Position

The Headrig Operator is responsible for safely and efficiently operating the headrig saw equipment to convert logs into cants or boards according to production specifications. This role requires strong attention to detail, equipment knowledge, and the ability to maintain consistent product quality in a fast-paced sawmill environment.

Requirements

  • Ability to safely operate large industrial machinery.
  • Strong mechanical aptitude and understanding of sawmill processes.
  • Ability to read production orders, measurements, and equipment gauges.
  • Good hand-eye coordination and situational awareness.
  • Ability to work in hot, cold, and loud environments.

Nice To Haves

  • Prior experience as a Headrig Operator or Sawyer.
  • Knowledge of lumber grades, log scaling, and wood species.
  • Experience with computerized or automated sawmill systems.
  • Previous experience in a sawmill or industrial manufacturing environment.

Responsibilities

  • Operate the headrig saw to process logs into required dimensions and products.
  • Monitor log alignment, cutting accuracy, and equipment performance during operation.
  • Adjust sawing speeds, feed rates, and cutting patterns based on log characteristics and production needs.
  • Maximize recovery and yield while reducing waste and maintaining product quality.
  • Communicate with offbearers, edger operators, and other mill personnel to ensure smooth production flow.
  • Follow all mill safety rules, lockout/tagout procedures, and PPE requirements.
  • Inspect logs for defects or hazards prior to processing.
  • Report unsafe conditions, near misses, or equipment concerns immediately to supervision.
  • Participate in safety meetings and required training.
  • Perform routine preventive maintenance and lubrication on headrig components.
  • Inspect saw blades, guides, and machinery to ensure proper function.
  • Notify maintenance personnel of mechanical issues or needed repairs.
  • Maintain a clean and organized work area.
  • Ensure cuts meet mill specifications for size, tolerances, and grade.
  • Monitor lumber output for defects and adjust cutting processes as needed.
  • Document production data, measurements, and any deviations from standards.
  • Coordinate with log yard personnel on log sequencing and species.
  • Work cooperatively with sawyers, maintenance, and production teams to support mill goals.
  • Assist other production areas when required to maintain workflow.
