About The Position

The Head of Wholesale Claims - Financial Lines plays a critical leadership role within the North America Claims and reports directly to the Head of Financial Lines Claims, North America. The Claims Manager will lead a sophisticated team of claims professionals and oversee a complex portfolio of Financial Lines claims products including Directors & Officers (D&O), Employment Practices Liability (EPL) and related lines. This role combines strategic leadership, technical expertise, and market engagement. The successful candidate will drive best-in-class claims handling across high-exposure corporate governance and workplace-related matters, develop and mentor junior talent, and serve as a trusted advisor to underwriting, reinsurance, and senior internal and external stakeholders. The position is central to AXIS’s ability to respond to evolving corporate, regulatory, and employment-related risks.

Requirements

  • Juris Doctor and member in good standing with a state bas association.
  • Minimum of 7-10 years of claims management, insurance coverage or complex business litigation experience.
  • Experience handling or managing D&O, EPL, or other Financial Lines claims, including employment discrimination and retaliation claims, securities class actions, shareholder derivative suits, and government investigations.
  • Appropriate state insurance adjuster licenses, or the ability to obtained required licenses shortly after starting.
  • Passion for mentoring, training, and developing claims professionals and future leaders.
  • Proven leadership, organizational, and technical skills in managing complex claims.
  • Strong negotiation, case strategy, and claim resolution abilities.
  • Experience presenting sophisticated topics to senior management, clients, brokers, and other stakeholders.
  • Data-driven mindset with the ability to manage, analyze, and report on performance metrics.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

Responsibilities

  • Lead and manage a team of claims professionals handling a diverse portfolio of D&O, EPL and related claims, including coaching, performance management, and professional development.
  • Oversee a complex portfolio of D&O and EPL claims including, among others, shareholder class actions and derivative claims, bankruptcy, and government investigations, as well as wrongful employment acts, discrimination, retaliation, and whistleblower claims.
  • Recruit, hire, train, and retain top claims and legal talent, while developing succession plans and career paths for adjusters and attorneys.
  • Review, process, and assign new claims to adjusters, ensuring efficient workflows, timely service, and adherence to AXIS best-practice standards.
  • Determine the nature of loss, coverage, and scope of claims, and provide strategic direction on claim investigation, valuation, and resolution.
  • Provide technical advice and guidance to direct reports on complex coverage, liability, and litigation issues.
  • Manage defense and coverage counsel, partnering to deliver efficient, high-quality results.
  • Collaborate closely with AXIS’s Specialty Complex Claims (SCC) team on significant coverage disputes and litigation/arbitration involving AXIS.
  • Manage third-party administrator (TPA) relationships, including oversight of TPAs handling EPL and D&O claims on AXIS’s behalf.
  • Collaborate with team members across AXIS to create innovative claims offerings and strategic plans.
  • Foster strong relationships and communicate extensively with senior executives, brokers, insureds, reinsurers, actuaries, underwriters, and auditors.
  • Partner with underwriting on policy language interpretation, drafting considerations, broker and insured relationships, claim trends, and emerging risks.
  • Travel to attend mediations, meetings, conferences, and marketing engagements, and support team leaderships and market presence.
