About this role: Wells Fargo is seeking a Managing Director, Head of Sponsors Portfolio Management. This role manages a team of portfolio managers that support the underwriting, ongoing monitoring, and active management of a portfolio of corporate credit relationships, with a focus on ensuring prudent risk management and disciplined execution. Head of Sponsors Portfolio Management will work in close coordination with leadership from Financial Sponsors Coverage Group, Leveraged Underwriting, Credit Officers, Product Partners (including Capital Markets, Treasury, and Risk), and other internal stakeholders to ensure seamless credit-related execution and portfolio oversight. In this role, you will: Provide senior leadership and oversight of financial and credit risk management for a portfolio of sponsor‑owned portfolio companies Own the end‑to-end credit monitoring framework for the leveraged credit portfolio, including risk ratings, covenant compliance, watchlist governance, and early identification of emerging risks and problem credits Lead and review complex credit and financial analysis, industry assessments, and projection modeling to support informed risk and portfolio decisions Drive preparation of executive‑level discussion materials for leadership forums and engagement with independent risk partners Oversee coverage of client credit needs across core lending and related risk management products, including Interest Rate Swaps, FX, and operating exposure solutions Direct ad‑hoc borrower, sector, and portfolio‑level analyses to support strategic decisioning and risk mitigation Accountable for the quality and timely completion of annual reviews, portfolio status updates, and watchlist reporting Lead portfolio reviews and reporting for senior management, ensuring clear articulation of risk themes, concentrations, and trends Ensure consistent adherence to credit policies and procedures, embedding policy requirements into analysis, observations, and lending recommendations Act as a senior collaborator and trusted advisor to bankers, risk partners, and stakeholders across the platform Champion continuous development of portfolio management talent, risk discipline, and best practices across the team

Requirements

  • 8+ years of Lending or Investment Banking experience, or equivalent demonstrated through one or a combination of the following: work experience, training, military experience, education
  • 4+ years of management or leadership experience

  • Experience leading Portfolio Management within a Corporate & Investment Bank, with deep expertise in leveraged lending and sponsor‑backed portfolios
  • Demonstrated senior‑level understanding of Investment Banking and Corporate Banking products, including Capital Markets, M&A, and complex loan underwriting structures
  • Advanced credit acumen, including financial accounting, cash‑flow analysis, structuring considerations, and complex financial modeling for leveraged transactions
  • Proven leadership capability, with a track record of operating effectively both independently and through teams, influencing outcomes across Banking, Risk, and senior stakeholders
  • Executive‑level communication skills, with the ability to clearly articulate risk, credit views, and portfolio themes to senior management and governance forums

  • Registration for FINRA Series 63 or 66 must be completed within 90 days of hire date. FINRA recognized equivalents will be accepted.
