Head of Software Engineering

About The Position

Nox Metals is building America's first software-first metals service center. Our goal: deliver raw metal to any factory in America in under 24 hours. We start with custom-cut aluminum for CNC machining and use automation to compress lead times that have sat at multiple days for decades. The core of the operation is a software stack we call NOX NEST, a job intelligence engine that handles quoting, nesting optimization, scheduling, and machine operations. It runs our automated cutting cells and feeds a data pipeline we're building to train the next generation of toolpath and process models. You are the first dedicated engineering leader at Nox. You start by shipping code. You own the stack. Over time you build the team around you. This is a deeply technical role at the intersection of industrial automation, computer vision, and applied machine learning. You will spend real time on the factory floor. The machines you're writing software for are physically cutting metal. You will write code that physically moves things. The feedback loop between a model you train and a real cut on real metal is measured in minutes. The supply chain problem is real, unsolved at this scale, and ours to own. If you want to go deep on hard technical problems and build something that matters for American manufacturing, this is the role.

Requirements

  • Strong software engineering fundamentals with production system experience (5+ years)
  • Hands-on ML experience, ideally in applied settings rather than research
  • Computer vision experience is a strong plus: inspection systems, dimensional measurement, or real-time image processing
  • Comfort working close to hardware: robotics, CNC, PLCs, or industrial control systems
  • Optimization and algorithms background, scheduling, bin packing, constraint solving, or similar
  • Full-stack capable: you can own database schema, backend services, and operator UI without needing to delegate
  • Experience managing or growing an engineering team
  • Based in or willing to relocate to Detroit

Nice To Haves

  • manufacturing software leadership experience

Responsibilities

  • Nesting and job scheduling algorithms that minimize material waste and maximize machine throughput across a growing fleet of automated cells
  • Computer vision pipelines for real-time cut quality inspection and dimensional verification
  • ML models for cut time estimation, material yield prediction, and automated toolpath generation
  • Machine integration layers that bridge our software to CNC controllers, saws, and sensors in real time
  • Customer-facing APIs and integrations for order intake and fulfillment tracking
  • The data infrastructure that closes the feedback loop from G-code to physical output, building our long-term model training moat
  • Operator UX that makes complex machine orchestration simple enough to run at scale
