About The Position

The Director of Engineering will help set the direction of the company’s product strategy in the U.S. and Canada, driving growth through innovation and optimization. This role ensures that our strategy is executed with the right velocity, quality, and cost-effectiveness. The individual will drive CMB’s generative AI product and technology vision and strategy, focusing on improving internal engineering productivity and enhancing external customer-facing mobile app features. The position also involves managing the Engineering workforce budget and overall operational costs, leveraging an existing network of engineers for cost-effective hiring to achieve long-term profit margin goals. The role requires travel at least once per quarter to collaborate with the Engineering team in Toronto and potential new engineering hubs, as well as at least one annual trip to Asia to meet with CMB Worldwide partners. The Director will be responsible for engineering team effectiveness, ensuring business impact at a sustainable pace while maintaining quality and team health. As an empathetic people manager, the individual will provide mentorship, feedback, and a clear job leveling framework for team growth. Maintaining the highest standards of security and compliance to protect user data and infrastructure is also a key responsibility.

Requirements

• At least 10 years of software engineering experience, including backend code development and iOS/Android consumer native applications.
• At least 5 years of engineering people management experience in a software development setting.
• Experience hiring engineering teams in lower-cost locations outside the U.S. and Canada.
• Existing network of engineers that can be efficiently and cost-effectively hired.
• Experience working with AWS cloud infrastructure.
• Some experience using Gen AI coding technologies to improve software development productivity.
• Demonstrated curiosity in Gen AI technologies.
• Some experience working at a smaller company (less than 100 employees) or willingness to work in a small, lean company.

Nice To Haves

• Strong technical skills in Python (Django).
• Experience working on freemium mobile dating app products.
• Experience in machine learning (ML).
• Fluency in spoken Mandarin Chinese.
