About The Position

Under the direction of the Association Aquatics Director, the Head Lifeguard is responsible for supervising, scheduling, and training lifeguards to ensure a safe and welcoming environment at the T.K. Gregg Pool. This role includes performing lifeguarding duties, leading by example, and assisting with the administrative tasks essential to the effective operation of the aquatics department. Requirements

  • Minimum of a High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • Must have or be willing to obtain all necessary American Red Cross Aquatic Certifications, including but not limited to: Lifeguard with CPRo / First Aid / AED / Emergency Oxygen (O2)
  • Must attain YMCA Leader Certification within 1 year of employment.
  • Must maintain consistent communication with the Aquatics Leadership Team & City of Spartanburg.
  • Strong interpersonal and relationship-building skills.
  • Proactive and self-motivated with the ability to work effectively as part of a team.
  • Must embody and promote the YMCA values in both personal and professional life.
  • Computer proficiency required, especially with Microsoft Office and experience using database software programs.

  • YSL v6 Swim Lesson Instructor (preferred)

Responsibilities

  • Schedule and oversee lifeguard shifts and rotations.
  • Serve as a leader and role model while actively lifeguarding.
  • Provide coaching and feedback to lifeguard staff in a constructive and respectful manner.
  • Maintain effective communication with staff, other departments, and Association Aquatics Director.
  • Monitor the pool area, enforce safety rules, and respond to emergencies as trained.
  • Lifeguard resource for scheduling needs of the facility.
  • Conduct regular inspections of the pool and deck to ensure safety and cleanliness.
  • Assist in facilitating lifeguard in-service trainings, staff meetings, and emergency drills.
  • Maintain up-to-date certification records, daily DHEC logs, and incident/accident reports.
  • Check and log water temperature and chemical levels daily, reporting any irregularities.
  • Support and help implement aquatics programs, trainings, and marketing efforts.
  • Assist with minor maintenance tasks and ensure proper pool equipment care.
  • Promote and uphold the YMCA's mission and values in all communications and interactions.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned to support YMCA operations.
