About The Position

The Head Lifeguard at the YMCA of Greater Monmouth County is responsible for ensuring the safety of all aquatic participants in and around the pool area. This role involves supervising other lifeguards, maintaining a safe pool environment, and acting as the primary responder in emergencies. The Head Lifeguard must exhibit leadership qualities and effectively communicate with both members and staff.

Requirements

  • Must be at least 19 years of age and possess a high school diploma or equivalent.
  • Current YMCA lifeguard certification.
  • Current CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer, First Aid, and Oxygen certifications.
  • At least 2 years of experience as a lifeguard.
  • Proficient in swimming and safety skills.
  • Demonstrated leadership qualities and ability to work with minimal supervision.
  • Observant, safety-conscious, and able to react calmly and quickly to emergencies.

Responsibilities

  • Ensure constant surveillance of the pool area to identify dangerous situations and assure swimmer safety.
  • Respond to emergencies in accordance with lifeguard training, including administering First Aid, CPR, and Oxygen when necessary.
  • Lead lifeguards through shift assignments, ensuring active scanning and proper rotation protocols are followed.
  • Communicate clearly with members and staff using effective listening skills.
  • Maintain cleanliness and order in the pool area and locker rooms, ensuring all aquatic equipment is properly used and stored.
  • Conduct aquatic drills as outlined by the Aquatic Director and test water chemistry and temperatures.
  • Complete and submit incident report forms following any incidents and notify supervisors of any equipment needs or safety concerns.
