About The Position

In accordance with the Christian Principles of the YMCA, a head lifeguard supervises the aquatic facility and/or aquatic activities to secure and ensure the safety of all those involved, providing leadership of staff and support of the Aquatic Director. A head lifeguard also maintains all areas in and around the aquatic facility. These duties will be performed while practicing the YMCA Core Values of Caring, Honesty, Respect, and Responsibility.

Requirements

  • Must hold and maintain current YMCA or American Red Cross Training Certifications in the following areas: Lifeguarding CPR for the Professional Rescuer; First Aid Training
  • LGI or working toward certification within 6 months of hire.
  • Must be mature, dependable, and have a proven aquatic background.
  • Must be 18 years of age
  • Must have at least 2 years of experience.
  • Must exemplify the character values of caring, honesty, respect, and responsibility.

Responsibilities

  • Work guarding shifts as needed based on pool demand, primarily when the Aquatics Director or Coordinator- may change seasonally
  • Support lifeguards when the Aquatics Director or Coordinator are not on site.
  • Minimum of 12 hours per week and a maximum of 30 hours per week during the off-season. Not to exceed 40 hours in peak season.
  • Ability to lift minimum 50 pounds
  • Help get pools ready for pool inspections.
  • Maintain accurate records for water readings, schedules, and maintenance cleaning schedules.
  • Know and enforce aquatic rules, procedures, policies, and guidelines.
  • Thorough knowledge of all aquatic programming.
  • Dress appropriately for guarding duties: wear a lifeguard staff shirt, a swimsuit (red, black, or navy), whistles, and a fanny pack.
  • Able to deal with members’ concerns and needs in a professional manner.
  • Ensure that all opening and closing procedures are followed.
  • Attend all in-service training
  • Adhere to policies related to boundaries with children and teens
  • Attend required abuse risk management training annually
  • Adhere to procedures for managing high-risk activities and supervising children and teens.
  • Report suspicious or inappropriate behaviors and policy violations.
  • Follow mandated abuse reporting requirements.
