About The Position

The Legacy Foundation Christine Stamper Center for Help & Hope, located in Mohave Country, is the only emergency shelter for families in the Tri-State area. Our shelter in Bullhead City provides day resources as well as temporary shelter for male, female, veterans, and families. Clients are offered hot meals, shower facilities, a wellness clinic, laundry area, hygiene supplies and access to computers to aid in obtaining work. We also offer seasonal amenities for those that need them and are not willing or unable to stay in our shelter. The shelter is staffed with compassionate employees and volunteers who strive to walk alongside those experiencing homelessness on their path to permanently improve their lives. Center for Help and Hope is a pre-eminent Emergency Shelter that serves those experiencing homelessness in our community. We offer a haven where our guests can get a hot meal, have their laundry done, take a shower, obtain clothing, and other items necessary for survival. Our Head Cook will be responsible for the entire food service operations at the Center; food preparation, purchasing, sanitation, housekeeping, inventory, recordkeeping and compliance. Prepares nutritious meals for clients, enabling them to be better prepared to gain self-sufficiency.

Requirements

  • Minimum of High School Diploma or Equivalent.
  • 2 years’ experience preparing and serving food in a high-volume kitchen, with at least one year in a large residential facility preferred.
  • Ability to prepare nutritious meals based on USDA recommendations.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of food and kitchen safety codes and procedures.
  • Knowledge and sensitivity to diverse populations, including gender, age, ethnic and racial backgrounds, religious preferences, sexual orientation, and socio-economic status.
  • Computer proficiency (MS Office) and superior organizational skills.
  • Ability to multi-task and function in a fast-paced environment.
  • Must be able to work in a fast-paced environment with moderate interruptions.
  • Must be able to stoop, bend, squat, and ambulate over uneven floor surfaces including stairs and steps.
  • Primarily office work, travel within area on a frequent basis, travel to other areas of state as needed.
  • Evening and weekend hours required as needed.
  • Must be able to visually and auditory assess and interact with clients to ensure their safety and wellbeing.
  • May lift up to 30-35 lbs. The employee is frequently exposed to heat, steam, fire, and noise.
  • Valid AZ driver’s license with driving record acceptable to insurer’s standards, reliable transportation and ability to show proof of registration/insurance.
  • You must be 21 years of age or older to drive on behalf of Catholic Charities.
  • Level One Fingerprint clearance or ability to obtain fingerprint clearance; must maintain clearance.
  • Must have or complete within 90 days of hire, training in CPR and First Aid and remain current in the certification.
  • Food Manager Certification.

  • Experience working with the homeless, veterans, and/or disadvantaged populations is preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Responsible for ensuring that residents have nutritious, healthy meals, in compliance with national guidelines on nutrition.
  • Wash, peel and cut various foods, including but not limited to meats, fruits, and vegetables to prepare for cooking or serving.
  • Verify that prepared food meets Federal, State and local requirements for quality and quantity.
  • Apportions and serves food to residents.
  • Inventories, orders, and restocks food and kitchen supply items, while adhering to budget requirements. Reports on actual expenditures to budget on a monthly basis.
  • Ensures that kitchen appliances, equipment and work areas are clean and functioning properly.
  • Ensure food is stored and cooked at correct temperature by regulating temperatures of refrigerator, freezer, ovens, boilers, grills, and toasters.
  • Wash pots, pans, dishes, utensils and other cooking and eating equipment.
  • Ensure the kitchen area is cleaned and sanitized on a regular basis, a cleaning schedule is posted and adhered to and kitchen counter tops are intact and are sanitized before food preparation begins and after completed. Sanitize all surfaces before food is served.
  • Interfaces with kitchen inspectors – Mohave County, and City of Bullhead by inspecting food preparation areas such as equipment, work surfaces and serving areas to ensure safe and sanitary food handling practices.
  • Ensures that food services policies comply with requirements of inspecting agencies.
  • Properly wrap, label, date and store all food items.
  • Maintains accurate kitchen logs for inspections.
  • Creates weekly/monthly menus.
  • Provides scheduling, oversight, and guidance to volunteers, donors and supporters for food donations, kitchen equipment, and kitchen supply items.
  • Participates in menu and food preparation for special events as requested by the Center Program Manager, and CCCS management as requested.
  • Provides kitchen back-up support for donor organizations preparing meals on an as needed basis.
  • Maintains complete and accurate records on all food and kitchen supply purchases.
  • Participates in Center staff meetings. Contributes to Center strategic planning and activities coordination.
  • Provides supervision and training for activities of volunteers.
  • Demonstrates continuous effort to improve operations.
  • Promote ongoing commitment to excellence and continual quality improvement to ensure the highest quality of services to our staff and clients.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
