The Head Cheer Coach serves as the head coach for the cheerleaders and is responsible for the organization, direction, and administration of all aspects of the GCU Cheerleaders in accordance with the University and NCAA rules and regulations.

Requirements

  • Minimum 3 years work experience as a coach for cheerleading or dance team.
  • CPR, First Aid and Coaches’ Safety Training certifications required; AED preferred.
  • Must work evenings, holidays and weekends and travel overnight as needed.
  • Must be able to pass a background check.
  • Must have a Valid driver’s license and driving record that meets University requirements.

  • Provide a positive example to students by supporting the University’s Doctrinal Statement, Ethical Position Statement and Mission of Grand Canyon University.

Responsibilities

  • Coach student athletes who serve as cheerleaders and mascots, including planning and monitoring practices and meetings.
  • Create and script original cheers, chants and routines for games and competition and instruct cheerleaders, mascots, and in partnership with Spirit Programs manager, the Havoc leaders.
  • Review the cheerleaders’ academic performance and academic progress, review progress with individual cheerleaders, and implement corrective actions to keep team members eligible to participate.
  • Partnering with Director of Game Entertainment, schedule, supervise and monitor community events and public appearances, both on and off campus, ensuring that the cheerleaders maintain and project a positive image for the University and the Athletics Department.
  • Fundraise to help support the GCU Cheer program.
  • Manage recruiting program to attract a diverse and talented pool of applicants.
  • Create budget and manage budget usage for travel and other tasks related to cheer team.
  • Other duties as assigned.
