About The Position

The Head Boys Basketball Coach is responsible for the overall leadership, organization, and supervision of the Hopewell High School Boys Basketball program. The coach will oversee all aspects of the program, including athlete development, coaching staff supervision, program administration, and compliance with VHSL regulations and Hopewell City Public Schools policies. The position emphasizes the development of student-athletes through athletics by promoting academic success, leadership, teamwork, and sportsmanship while striving for competitive excellence. The Head Coach serves as a positive representative of the school and athletic program within the school community and at all athletic events.

Requirements

  • The ideal candidate will possess demonstrated experience coaching basketball at the high school or collegiate level, with a strong knowledge of basketball fundamentals, strategy, conditioning, and program development.
  • The candidate must exhibit strong leadership, communication, organizational, and mentoring skills, along with the ability to foster positive relationships with student-athletes, parents, staff, and community members.
  • The successful candidate must be able to meet all Virginia High School League (VHSL) and school division certification requirements prior to the start of the season, including required safety and coaching certifications, and must satisfy all applicable background check requirements.
  • The candidate should demonstrate a commitment to promoting academic achievement, sportsmanship, and character development while maintaining a student-centered coaching philosophy.

Responsibilities

  • Direct and supervise all levels of the Boys Basketball program, including Varsity and Junior Varsity teams.
  • Establish and communicate a clear program philosophy aligned with the mission and values of Hopewell High School.
  • Recruit, mentor, supervise, and evaluate assistant coaches.
  • Plan, organize, and conduct structured and developmentally appropriate practices.
  • Teach basketball fundamentals, offensive and defensive systems, and game preparation strategies.
  • Promote and monitor student-athlete academic progress and VHSL eligibility requirements.
  • Foster discipline, accountability, teamwork, leadership, and sportsmanship among student-athletes.
  • Prepare teams for district, regional, and state competition in accordance with VHSL guidelines.
  • Ensure strict compliance with all VHSL rules regarding eligibility, recruiting, practice limitations, and sportsmanship.
  • Maintain required VHSL certifications, including Coaches Education Program, Concussion Training, Heat Illness Prevention, and Sudden Cardiac Arrest Training.
  • Ensure the safety, supervision, and well-being of student-athletes at all times.
  • Coordinate with athletic trainers and school administration regarding injuries and emergency procedures.
  • Assist the Athletic Director with scheduling, budgeting, equipment management, and program organization.
  • Conduct preseason parent and player meetings to communicate expectations and team policies.
  • Maintain professional and timely communication with parents, faculty, administration, and community stakeholders.
  • Represent Hopewell High School with professionalism and integrity at athletic events and community functions.
  • Support and encourage multi-sport participation consistent with VHSL philosophy.
  • Travel with and supervise the team during practices, competitions, and related events.
  • Perform other duties related to the basketball program as assigned by the Athletic Director or administration.

  • Compensation is provided as a stipend in accordance with the school division’s approved coaching salary schedule.
