About The Position

Regular, Full-Time, RCUH Non-Civil Service position with the Social Science Research Institute (SSRI), Hawai'i Coral Reef Initiative (HCRI), located in Honolulu, Hawai'i. Primary work locations will be at the Division of Aquatic Resource (DAR), Department of Land and Natural Resources (DLNR); the Hawai'i Ocean Science and Technology (HOST) Park; and Natural Energy Laboratory of Hawai'i Authority (NELHA) in Kailua-Kona, Hawai'i and designated worksites on Hawai'i Island. Continuation of employment is dependent upon program/operational needs, satisfactory work performance, availability of funds, and compliance with applicable Federal/State laws.

Requirements

  • At least two (2) years of college level coursework from an accredited college or university which includes Marine Science courses.
  • One to three (1-3) years of experience with recreational or scientific SCUBA diving.
  • Familiar with Microsoft Excel and word processing.
  • Familiar with commonly used underwater scientific survey techniques.
  • Willingness to learn to identify Hawaiian reef fish, corals, algae, and invertebrates.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Excel, Word, and PowerPoint.
  • Ability to maintain a high degree of accuracy and precision.
  • Must be SCUBA certified (NAUI, PADI, etc.) as an Open Water Diver.
  • Must possess a valid driver's license and maintain throughout the duration of employment.

Nice To Haves

  • Associate's Degree from an accredited four (4) year college or university with coursework in Marine Science.
  • Familiarity with Hawaiian reef fish, corals, algae, and invertebrates.
  • Basic knowledge of biological principles and Hawaiian marine ecology.
  • Experience working with corals.
  • Previous authorization as a scientific diver from an AAUS accredited organization.
  • Experience operating a boat.
  • Experience performing standard laboratory culturing and aquaculture techniques.

Responsibilities

  • Conducts underwater fieldwork.
  • Performs fish and benthic surveys utilizing SCUBA and underwater scientific survey techniques.
  • Identifies and collects coral specimens for in situ transplantation or transportation to the coral nursery.
  • Assists with coral transplantation, reattachment, and out planting.
  • Assists with post-processing and species annotation of survey images.
  • Inputs fish survey data and conducts basic data quality control.
  • Organizes digital files with guidance from lead biologist and monitoring biologist.
  • Assists with daily husbandry operations of the coral nursery at HOST, NELHA.
  • Conducts meticulous scientific procedures involved with tissue-level interactions with coral animals and algal plants.
  • Conducts effective propagation techniques and basic water chemistry procedures.
  • Assists with the maintenance, repair, and minor fabrications related to the aquaculture facility.
  • Cleans and maintains saltwater aquaria, outdoor aquaculture tanks, and raceways.
  • Operates small vessels in near coastal and inshore Hawaiian waters.
  • Prepares for fieldwork by gathering and loading necessary data sheets and survey supplies/equipment.
