The HBM Operator position at BWX Technologies involves operating large CNC Horizontal Boring Mills and performing multi-axis machining operations with high precision. The role is part of a weekend shift schedule, allowing employees to work 32 hours while being compensated for 40 hours. The operator will collaborate with programmers, set up and operate machinery, and ensure quality through inspections and documentation.

  • Set up and operate large CNC Horizontal Boring Mills and associated auxiliary equipment.
  • Perform multi-axis machining operations including contour milling, boring, drilling, and tapping.
  • Work with programmers to develop and test run programs, proofread programs, and notify supervisors of potential issues.
  • Position and secure work pieces and fixtures on the machine table.
  • Obtain and verify tools from the crib for accuracy against program specifications.
  • Assemble tooling as required and collaborate with tooling engineers for optimal designs.
  • Assist crane operators with rigging and moving parts for loading and unloading.
  • Conduct final inspections using precision measuring equipment and inspection probes.
  • Clean and deburr jobs as necessary, attaching seals and protective covers as required.
  • Perform minor maintenance on machines and tooling as needed.
  • Maintain cleanliness and orderliness of the work area and equipment.
  • Complete necessary documentation and maintain production records.
  • High school diploma or GED equivalency required.
  • Minimum of two years relevant experience in precision machining on large machines is desired.
  • Journeyman level machinist designation or equivalent preferred.
  • Proficient with CNC controls, including G and M coded commands.
  • Ability to edit or modify programs and write minor programs as necessary.
  • Working knowledge of feeds and speeds for various materials.
  • Ability to work to ±.001" tolerance and achieve microfinish 16 when required.
  • Demonstrated ability to read and interpret geometric tolerancing per ANSI Y14.5.
  • Experience using various measuring instruments, including dial bore gauges and micrometers.
  • Skills to maintain accurate documentation and follow complex procedures.
