Description of Work: •Fellow will work in the NCDOT Rail Division and assist with projects related to economic development, passenger rail planning, passenger rail special events, and passenger rail communications. •Fellow will be supervised by the Freight Rail and Economic Development Manager, and the intern and fellow will work together to provide administrative support to Rail Division staff. •Example work projects for the intern and fellow include researching companies that use freight rail services, scheduling meetings with economic development agencies, engaging Convention and Visitor Bureaus to research large tourism events, planning and executing special passenger rail events, and working on communications and marketing projects to promote passenger rail services. •Conduct research to identify companies that use freight rail and companies that are potential freight rail users. •Schedule introductory meetings with economic development agencies at the municipal, county, and regional level. •Engage with Convention and Visitor Bureau (CVB) agencies to conduct research on large tourism events along the NC By Train passenger rail corridor. •Complete activities that support the planning and execution of NC By Train special events that promote increased passenger train ridership. Special events include special train stops at the NC State Fair, Lexington BBQ festival, Cheerwine Festival, Rockingham Speedway, etc. •Complete activities that support communication and marketing efforts for passenger rail services, freight and passenger rail research, and NC By Train special events. •Support NCDOT Rail Division staff with freight rail and passenger rail research projects. Training: •On the job training, professional development, site visits.
