About The Position

The Department of Fire Services (DFS), Hazardous Materials Response Division is recruiting to fill vacancies at the Stow location, with opportunities including but not limited to delivery, pick-up, repair, inspection, or inventory Hazardous Materials Response Equipment throughout the Commonwealth. Hazardous Materials Support Team Member must be available to work a minimum of 1-2 shifts on average per week and be available to work in the event of an emergency. The primary focus of these positions is to support all needs of the five Hazardous Materials Response Districts throughout the Commonwealth. This is a part-time, contract position with no benefits. The Hazardous Materials Response Division, within the Department of Fire Services, provides emergency response to municipal departments as the departments deem fit. Description of Duties: Provide support and assistance for five hazardous materials response districts and specialty response teams throughout the Commonwealth. Assist, operate, and troubleshoot hazardous materials equipment. Deliver equipment to fully equip trucks for incident response. Participate in heavy manual labor including but not limited to the loading and unloading of trucks and trailers for deliveries. Provide support by cleaning, inspecting, repairing, or otherwise putting equipment into service for use. Perform related duties such as, moving equipment to other locations both physically and electronically within the inventory system; using powered and hand equipment; maintaining the cleanliness of the warehouse; assist with trucks in each district; and other related duties. May be assigned to drive a hazardous materials response truck or other vehicle weighing over 26,000 gvw. Support staff work outdoors in all types of weather, lift, and carry heavy objects. Assist with D4H inventory software including but not limited to equipment, supplies, inspections, qualifications, and other duties. Support and assist with annual fit testing of all members. Support and assist with training to all response team members throughout the Commonwealth. May be asked to assist in the repair, rebuilding or fabricating of hazardous materials equipment.

Requirements

  • High School diploma or General Education Degree (GED)
  • Two years experience as a firefighter, a MA Hazardous Materials Technician, or in a facilities maintenance, mechanical or technical trade.
  • Possession of a valid Driver’s License
  • Must have demonstrated manual dexterity, physical stamina, and endurance.
  • Ability to properly lift, carry, and otherwise move extremely heavy equipment and supplies.
  • Skilled in using small hand tools, power tools, and motorized equipment.
  • Must have knowledge and experience with Hazardous Materials Equipment.
  • Must be able and willing to travel to assigned work location, which could be any community in the Commonwealth.
  • Able to work all shifts: days, nights and/or weekends, as assigned. (Primarily Monday through Friday day shift).
  • Knowledge of basic computer skills.
  • Basic familiarity with all hazardous materials equipment used in incident response.
  • Ability to work as a team with others performing like duties to meet the organizational objectives.
  • Ability to take direction from the Hazmat office staff and follow instructions without deviating from main objectives.
  • Ability to accomplish assigned work with little or no supervision.

Nice To Haves

  • Knowledge of D4H software
  • CDL A drivers license is preferred but not required.
  • Ability to make prudent and timely decisions based on good judgment and in the best interest of the Department of Fire Services and the Hazardous Materials Response Division.
