Purpose Provides technical skills in the operation and support of environmental health and safety programs in compliance with regulatory agency guidelines and institutional policies. Responsible for monitoring policies and procedures to ensure a safe and healthy working environment. Assists faculty and staff regarding the interpretation and implementation of health and safety regulations, policies and procedures.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution in Science, Natural Science, Engineering, Environmental Engineering, Biological Sciences, Physical Sciences or Occupational Health and Industrial Hygiene or related field. Relevant education and experience may be substituted as appropriate.
  • This job requires a class "C" operator's driver's license. The applicant selected must provide a current three-year driving record from the current state of residence. If not currently a Texas resident, a Texas driver's license must be obtained within 30 days of becoming a Texas resident.

Nice To Haves

  • Two years of experience in environmental health and safety or a related field.
  • Experience with environmental programs such as hazardous waste management, SPCC, Stormwater, PST, or wastewater.
  • Currently certified Hazardous Waste Operator or attended Hazardous Materials training.
  • Has attended training to be a Department of Transportation certified shipper for Hazardous Materials.

Responsibilities

  • Responsible for the safe collection, handling, and processing of hazardous waste, regulated medical waste, and other regulated waste materials for the University of Texas at Austin campuses following all regulatory requirements and internal procedures. This includes communicating effectively with internal customers to coordinate waste collections, address procedural waste management issues, and report waste management issues to senior staff or management as needed.
  • Maintains accurate up-to-date records of the collection, storage, and disposal of hazardous waste, regulated medical waste, and other regulated waste materials following all regulatory requirements and internal procedures.
  • Participate in the review and development of standard operating procedures with direct oversite from senior staff or management.
  • Responsible for maintaining waste facility cleanliness, conducting inspections, monitoring, and testing of sites, and the collection environmental samples under the direction of senior environmental staff to comply with permit and regulatory requirements of storm water, wastewater, SPCC, PST and other environmental programs.
  • Responds to environmental health and safety issues, complaints, and emergencies including hazardous/non-hazardous spills, odors, contamination, and injuries/exposures. Must be able to accurately gather information related to the potential impacts to the campus community, the environment, or facility safety or building infrastructure and clearly communicate findings to senior staff or management. Must be able to resolve incidents with support from senior staff or management. May perform incident investigations and prepare reports of observations and findings with direct oversite from senior staff or management.
  • Maintains an acceptable driver rating as established in Policy UTS157 Section 2.5.4.
  • Maintains and inspects equipment, orders supplies, and assists senior staff and other program areas as needed.
  • Attends staff meetings, safety training or meetings and training courses as required. May attend seminars and workshops to learn the current safety techniques and standards. May assist in conducting safety training classes for institutional employees and students, as required.
  • Performs other job related duties as assigned.
