About The Position
The Fire Department of the City of Naperville is seeking part-time Hazardous Materials (Haz-Mat) Assistants to support operations at the Household Hazardous Waste Disposal Site. This facility is located at 156 Fort Hill Drive, adjacent to the Public Works Service Center, and operates every Saturday and Sunday from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. Haz-Mat Assistants will play a crucial role in ensuring the safe and efficient disposal of hazardous materials brought in by residents. The position requires individuals to be available for approximately three weekend days each month, as the site is only open on weekends. It is important to note that this part-time position does not qualify for city benefits. The primary responsibilities of Haz-Mat Assistants include checking the driver's licenses of residents, distributing informational literature and brochures, and receiving hazardous waste from residents. Safety is paramount in this role, and Haz-Mat Assistants will be required to wear personal protective equipment (PPE) while handling hazardous materials. This PPE may include Tyvek suits, safety glasses, and gloves to ensure the safety of the employees while they perform their duties. The types of hazardous waste that may be received include automotive products, home repair materials, painting supplies, household cleaning products, pesticides, herbicides, batteries, and heavy items such as vehicle batteries and propane tanks. Candidates for this position must meet specific qualifications, including being at least 18 years of age, having the ability to work outdoors in various weather conditions, and being capable of lifting containers weighing between 25 to 50 pounds frequently. Additionally, the ability to wear personal protective equipment for extended periods is essential. A successful completion of a pre-employment, post-offer physical and drug screening is also required. Current employees of the City of Naperville are not eligible to apply for this position.
