About The Position

We are seeking a lead Hazardous Waste Technician to help APL dispose or recycle all regulated wastes in an environmentally friendly manner. As a member of our team, you will work with variety of Lab staff who conduct groundbreaking research aimed at providing solutions to critical challenges facing our nation. As a Hazardous Waste Technician, you will... Collect, transport, segregate, and prepare regulated wastes for offsite disposal or recycling (primary responsibility) Work in close coordination with on-site staff who support the regulated waste management program to coordinate waste collection and transport Ensure Main Accumulation Areas (MAAs) are maintained in compliance with all regulatory and internal policy requirements Maintain comprehensive records of waste streams from initial pick-up through final shipment Verify hazardous waste determinations made by waste generators Partner with the hazardous waste disposal contractor to develop waste profiles and coordinate shipment schedules Assist with processing of timely billing chargebacks to waste generators Evaluate and implement recycling options for regulated materials to minimize disposal costs and environmental impact Support additional Environmental, Health, and Safety (EHS) activities as needed

Requirements

  • Hold a high school diploma or GED equivalent
  • Have demonstrated experience working with hazardous materials or regulated waste streams
  • Possess knowledge of chemical handling procedures, chemical safety practices, and proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE)
  • Are willing and able to wear a respirator; lift up to 50 pounds; move heavy materials (including 55-gallon drums); use hand and power tools; and operate a forklift and pallet jack
  • Hold a valid state-of-residence driver's license in good standing
  • Meet the following eligibility requirement: U.S. citizenship or permanent resident status is required to access APL facilities and networks, subject to applicable laws.

Nice To Haves

  • Have experience leading or managing a regulated waste program
  • Hold a Associate Hazardous Materials Manager (AHMM), Certified Hazardous Materials Practitioner (CHMP)
  • Have completed Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA) and Department of Transportation (DOT) Hazardous Materials training
  • Possess an associate’s or bachelor’s degree in chemistry or a related field
