About The Position

The Hazardous Material and Waste Handler is responsible for identifying, removing, packing, transporting, or disposing of hazardous materials, including asbestos, lead-based paint, waste oil, fuel, transmission fluid, radioactive materials, or contaminated soil. This position supports Naval Kitsap Bangor near Silverdale & Poulsbo, Washington, and involves various duties related to hazardous waste management and spill response.

Requirements

  • High school education or equivalent.
  • Minimum of 1 year experience as a hazardous material handler trainee or equivalent preferred.
  • Skilled in the use of full face respirators, SCBA, safety equipment, pumps, compressors, cargo tanker trucks, five-ton trucks, and forklifts.
  • Ability to follow written and oral instructions in dealing with toxic chemicals and under hazardous conditions.
  • Possess and maintain a valid Washington State class 'B' commercial driver's license with a (H) Hazardous Endorsement within 6 months.
  • Meet and maintain company physical and security requirements, including respirator qualification.
  • Good communication skills for a service team environment.
  • Valid state issued driver's license with acceptable driving record.
  • Ability to successfully pass background checks and/or drug testing required on the contract.
  • U.S. Citizenship.
  • Pass a pre-employment physical examination qualifying for various training and use of SCBA, air-purifying respirators, and handling of 55-gallon drums.
  • Ability to lift 50lbs.
  • Pass an annual medical examination, which may include screens for toxic and heavy metals exposure.

Nice To Haves

  • Completion of 40 hours Hazardous Waste Facility Operations training before assignment.
  • Completion of SCBA Training, Respirator Training, CPR/First Aid Training before assignment.
  • Completion of Fire Extinguisher Training, Forklift Operation, SWFPAC General Explosive Safety Training, DOT Hazardous Material Training, and Confined Space training within 6 months after assignment.

Responsibilities

  • Perform duties associated with the collection, consolidation, packaging, labeling, and transporting of hazardous and regulated substances.
  • Assist in operating the Oily Waste Retention and Transfer Station and perform cargo tank transfers.
  • Clean stationary retention tanks and mobile tankers, inventory wastes, and maintain cleanliness of facilities.
  • Assist in performing treatments of hazardous waste and operating solvent recovery stills and bio-reactors.
  • Mark, label, and track hazardous waste, and operate chemical laboratory test equipment and gas detection instruments.
  • Support the Spill Response Team by recording messages, delivering equipment, and assisting in spill cleanup.
  • Function in LEVEL A-D Protection and operate various compressors, pumps, valves, and fittings.
  • Operate five-ton trucks, cargo tanker trucks, forklifts, and various communication systems.
  • Rotate between assignments at various locations including WRT, IWTP, Bremerton Naval Hospital, and Naval Station Bremerton.
