About The Position

The Hazardous Materials Technician II/III (Environmental Technician II/III) handles hazardous waste and completes procedures for waste characterization, processing and disposal, and ensures all operations comply with regulatory requirements. The position encompasses a variety of duties. In addition to handling waste materials, the Hazardous Materials Technician II/III (Environmental Technician II/III) may perform warehouse, maintenance, and cleanup activities needed to facilitate general operations and regulatory compliance. Level will be commensurate with experience.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or general education degree (GED)
  • At least six months of Chemical Operator related experience and /or training
  • Experience with proper handling of hazardous materials/waste
  • Experience keeping computerized records and databases updated per company or legal requirements
  • Basic computer experience (Word, Excel, Outlook)
  • Experience working within the regulatory requirements of RCRA and DOT or other regulated environment

Nice To Haves

  • Forklift experience a plus (Certification preferred)

Responsibilities

  • Transfers waste water, waste solvents, and other wastes between tanks, drums, and shipping containers using pumps, pressure and other equipment
  • Labels hazardous waste containers as appropriate to maintain compliance with labeling regulations and times
  • Learns/knows plant processes sufficiently to effectively characterize and manage process wastes
  • Maintains the hazardous waste accumulation area(s) in a clean and orderly condition
  • Performs yard and building cleanup as needed
  • Performs shipping and receiving activities as needed
  • Assists Manager, Environmental in record keeping and hazardous waste management
  • Assists in preparation of required reports for EPA and CDPHE
  • Uses company databases to create and maintain waste records and documents
  • Performs inspections as required by BSC and regulations to maintain compliance
  • Assists with or performs sampling to facilitate regulatory compliance and knowledge of materials
  • Attends classes as designated by Environmental Department to facilitate above knowledge and to maintain required updates
  • Handles drums, buckets, and other containers of hazardous and non-hazardous materials as products or waste
  • Combines partial drums to ensure all waste drums 90% full for shipping
  • Physically handles (scoops, shovels, buckets) wastes as needed
  • Repackages wastes for shipment to drum disposal facilities
  • Cleans drums for shipment to drum disposal facilities
  • Maintains the pit and sump areas; ensures areas are clean and equipment is in good working condition
  • Receives initial and annual training in RCRA; oversees the handling and disposal of hazardous wastes in accordance with RCRA, state and local regulations
