About The Position

The Hazardous Materials Specialist at Children's Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP) plays a crucial role in supporting the hazardous, universal, and pharmaceutical waste programs within the Environmental Health and Safety Department. This position is responsible for ensuring compliance with various regulations while promoting safety and environmental well-being. The specialist will manage waste programs, provide education, maintain records, and support the Industrial Hygiene Program, all while fostering strong relationships with staff and vendors.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree required; Environmental Health, Safety Science, or Chemistry preferred.
  • At least three years of experience in safety, environmental, or industrial hygiene required.
  • At least three years of experience with hazardous materials or waste preferred.
  • Demonstrated analytical ability and strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Medically cleared to wear Level B personal protective equipment.
  • HAZWOPER 24 or 40 hours training required within 180 days of placement.
  • Intermediate knowledge of safety guidelines and regulations from OSHA, NIOSH, EPA, and others.
  • Proficiency with personal protective equipment and office software (Microsoft Office).
  • Strong critical thinking, problem-solving, interpersonal, organizational, and time management skills.

Nice To Haves

  • Certified Hazardous Materials Manager (CHMM) preferred.
  • Certified Healthcare Environmental Manager (CHEM) preferred.
  • Haz Waste Ops & ER 24 or 40 hour certification preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Support daily operations for hazardous, universal, and pharmaceutical waste programs to ensure compliance with regulations.
  • Prepare shipments of hazardous materials and coordinate with mailroom management for vendor pickups.
  • Monitor and order stock supplies based on inventory levels.
  • Manage hazmat spills, including removal, neutralization, cleanup, and proper labeling.
  • Identify hazardous waste and coordinate waste analysis for proper disposal.
  • Manage central and satellite accumulation areas for EPA compliance.
  • Ensure vendor compliance and service level expectations through auditing and feedback.
  • Manage the Drug Take Back program in compliance with regulatory requirements.
  • Provide educational outreach regarding hazardous waste storage and chemical management.
  • Maintain training records for hazmat trained staff and oversee required reports for compliance.
  • Develop and update waste-related plans, policies, and procedures.
  • Support the Industrial Hygiene Program by maintaining chemical inventories and conducting trainings.
  • Conduct respirator fit testing and laboratory surveys, risk assessments, and incident investigations.
