About The Position

The Hazardous Materials Compliance Officer position within the Department of Public Safety's Division of Fire Safety is responsible for developing emergency response plans, supporting the Statewide Local Emergency Planning Committee (LEPC), and training first responders in hazardous materials management. This role also involves serving as a Technician-level member of the Vermont State Hazmat Team, providing technical expertise during hazardous materials incidents.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree or higher in chemistry, industrial hygiene, public health, fire science, engineering, or related field.
  • Four (4) or more years of experience in hazardous materials work, facility safety, chemical engineering, or related field.
  • Certification in ICS 100, 200 and 800, Hazardous Materials Technician, Firefighter I, Emergency Medical Technician, NFPA Fire Inspector I.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience involving the federal EPCRA/Superfund Amendment and Reauthorization Act (SARA).
  • Experience with federal or state hazardous materials regulations.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and implement hazardous materials response plans in compliance with the Federal Emergency Planning and Community Right-to-Know Act (EPCRA).
  • Design and deliver specialized training programs for first responders and Vermont State Hazmat Team members.
  • Support and coordinate activities of the Statewide LEPC to enhance emergency preparedness.
  • Serve as a Technician-level member of the Vermont State Hazmat Team during hazardous materials incidents.
  • Offer guidance on hazardous materials compliance and planning to state agencies, local governments, and other stakeholders.
  • Supervise and mentor subordinate positions as needed.
