About The Position

The Harm Reduction Advocate at the Gladys Ray Shelter plays a crucial role in providing safe emergency shelter and support services to homeless individuals, particularly those who cannot access other shelter options. This position involves direct interaction with guests and clients, ensuring their immediate needs are met while promoting a respectful and safe environment. The advocate is responsible for conducting guest intakes, assisting with housing referrals, and managing the day-to-day operations of the shelter and withdrawal management unit (WMU).

Requirements

  • High School diploma or GED.
  • Two years of experience in the Human Services Field, particularly with low-income and homeless populations, substance use, or behavioral health programs.
  • Valid driver's license for driving a City vehicle.
  • Ability to communicate effectively in both verbal and written forms.
  • Knowledge of local, state, and federal laws relating to social service activities.
  • Ability to multi-task, prioritize, and manage time effectively.
  • Commitment to maintaining confidentiality and appropriate boundaries.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience working in behavioral health, homelessness, and outreach preferred.
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office applications.

Responsibilities

  • Provide safe emergency shelter and drop-in services to homeless individuals.
  • Conduct guest intakes and assist with housing referrals.
  • Ensure safety and security of the shelter and WMU during shifts.
  • Complete intake, assessment, and monitoring per shelter and WMU policy.
  • Facilitate the check-in process for shelter guests and WMU clients.
  • Provide essentials such as food, fluids, and toiletries to guests and clients.
  • Maintain confidentiality and comply with regulations regarding client information.
  • Utilize harm reduction strategies when working with guests and clients.
  • Assist with community-based services and promote on-site services.
  • Participate in training and continuous learning about homelessness and substance use.
