About you and this role Dow is seeking an Instrument Hardware Discipline Technologist Lead to support our site in Carrollton, KY , providing specialized technical support and solutions for project teams, operations, and maintenance while implementing Most Effective Technology (MET), work processes, tools, and industry best practices within the discipline. Hardware Disciplines support both projects and technical support teams (serving as a Designer on large projects or the discipline Lead on projects); this role requires advanced expertise across complex processes, procedures, and systems and/or specialized technical expertise within an analytical/scientific method or operational process, and may act as a working team lead by providing subject matter guidance and coordinating the work of others.

Requirements

  • A minimum of an associate’s degree in engineering technology (or related field) plus 5+ years leading instrumentation design projects required.
  • 3+ years of relevant military experience in lieu of an associate’s degree is accepted.
  • Degree equivalency: High school diploma (or equivalent) plus 10+ years leading instrumentation design projects is accepted.

  • Must be legally authorized to work in the United States; no visa sponsorship/support is available for this position (including any U.S. permanent residency/green card process).
  • Discipline Technical Leadership & Expertise: Provide advanced technical guidance across hardware disciplines, applying Most Effective Technology (MET), industry standards, and best practices to support projects, operations, and maintenance in standard and hazardous area applications; experience in MicroStation and Smartplant Instrumentation Suite is essential.
  • Engineering Design & Inspection Capability: Ensure drawings, specifications, and deliverables are clear, accurate, and fit for purpose; verify contractor/fabricator compliance through effective review and inspection.
  • Project Leadership & Execution Management: Lead discipline scope; drive front-end loading; manage schedules, deliverables, and results; and deliver safely, on time, and within budget.
  • Cross‑Discipline Coordination & Collaboration: Direct discipline activities while coordinating with engineering and maintenance disciplines to enable integrated execution and alignment to project objectives.
  • Safety, Quality & Change Management: Embed safety in design, enforce work processes and change management, develop technical contract packages, and deliver economically optimized solutions that provide business value.

Responsibilities

  • Lead the Instrument discipline for assigned projects: manage results; drive front-end loading (scope definition, plans, schedules) to maintain execution control; and ensure deliverables function as intended, on time, and within budget.
  • Direct discipline activities and coordinate work with other disciplines, third parties, and other Dow/contract work centers (including workshare), as appropriate.
  • Lead estimating inputs by completing required discipline deliverables and reviewing estimate outputs to confirm an accurate reflection of scope.
  • Develop and support implementation of technical contract packages, and use/enforce the project change management program.
  • Drive economical designs that deliver best value to the business and embed safety in design by applying NFPA 70 (National Electrical Code) and adhering to Dow Safety standards.
  • Design instrument systems and size/select instrument equipment and installation hardware (e.g., control valves; flow, pressure, and temperature instruments); design SIS systems in collaboration with Dow SMEs; support design/installation of complex analyzer systems; and read/interpret loop drawings, electrical schematics, and process P&IDs.
  • Provide electrical design support as needed (not the primary role), including sizing motors/starters, VFDs, wiring/cable, circuit protection and transformers; and designing/supporting security alarm systems and fiber communications, heat trace circuits, and lighting circuits.
  • Prepare Instrument and Electrical construction documents and work packages, ensuring drawings and specifications are clear and meet business needs.
  • Support the construction phase by answering RFIs with consideration for the construction schedule; ensure required reviews are completed on time; and, when providing inspection, verify drawings and specifications are followed by fabricators, constructors, and maintenance contractors.
