About The Position

The Pixel Optics team is looking for a Hardware Engineer to lead the development of our next-generation metrology data systems and image processing pipelines. In this role, you will be designing, building, and maintaining the software infrastructure that underpins our hardware development and testing efforts. You will be in close collaboration with hardware engineers to understand their needs, as well as an ability to interface with other software teams to ensure cohesive tooling and data flow. Your work will directly impact the quality and efficiency of our optical system development for future Pixel products.The US base salary range for this full-time position is $126,000-$181,000 + bonus + equity + benefits. Our salary ranges are determined by role, level, and location. Within the range, individual pay is determined by work location and additional factors, including job-related skills, experience, and relevant education or training. Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, Physics, or a specialized field (e.g., Optics, Sensors, Audio/DSP, etc.), or equivalent practical experience.
  • 2 years of experience working in a software development, design, implementation, and testing technical environment.
  • Experience with image processing libraries/tools (e.g., OpenCV, NumPy, scikit-image) and fundamental image analysis techniques.
  • Experience in Python and with database design and management (e.g., SQL, Spanner).

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with lab hardware automation, instrument control, and data acquisition systems.
  • Experience building and deploying software pipelines in a production environment.
  • Knowledge of data analysis and visualization tools (Python, JMP, etc.).
  • Familiarity with camera systems, optical metrology, and data analysis.
  • Familiarity with Google internal development tools and infrastructure (e.g., google3, Cider, Blaze, Compute infrastructure, Colab).
  • Excellent communication skills and ability to explain software concepts to non-software audiences.

Responsibilities

  • Design, develop, and own the metrology database, ensuring data integrity, scalability, and accessibility for various teams.
  • Build and maintain automated image processing pipelines for characterization, calibration, and quality analysis of optical components and systems.
  • Collaborate deeply with other hardware engineers to gather requirements, integrate software with lab equipment, and provide easy-to-use tools for data collection and analysis.
  • Act as a software liaison, bridging the gap between the hardware-focused optics team and other software/infrastructure teams within Google.
  • Advocate software engineering best practices, including code reviews, testing, documentation, and version control, within the team.
