The Hall Director position is essential to the core mission of Michigan Housing. Hall Directors provide leadership to the residential operations in a way that maintains positive, multicultural, and learning-centered communities. This role involves supervising a full-time Community Center Manager and several paraprofessional student staff in day-to-day operations with residents. The Hall Director collaborates with other building staff in the opening and closing of the building and conducts crisis intervention and response, which includes communication and promotion of University policies and procedures. The Hall Director may also work directly with a co-Hall Director, enhancing the collaborative environment within the residence halls. The responsibilities of the Hall Director are divided into several key areas. The first is supervision, where the Hall Director selects, trains, supervises, and evaluates up to 45 students, including Resident Advisors and student desk workers in a residence hall or apartment community housing between 200 to 1,300 residents. This includes coordinating weekly staff meetings that update and reinforce training objectives, focusing on individual and staff development, and fostering an environment that supports student safety and security. In terms of administration, the Hall Director co-manages student residences, collaborating with various campus partners such as facilities services, dining services, and building security. They are responsible for programming and training budgets averaging $10,500 and participate in departmental and division-wide committees. The Hall Director also prepares periodic and annual reports and serves as a point-person for student referrals and resources. As a student development educator, the Hall Director promotes student learning, academic success, and co-curricular participation. They hold meaningful one-on-one and small group interactions with residents to engage and develop community, educate about restorative practices, and support diversity, equity, and inclusion. The Hall Director also advises and supports Housing student groups and communicates University policies and procedures. Finally, the Hall Director participates in a rotating duty schedule, providing on-call emergency and crisis response for an area housing approximately 3,000 students. This includes facilitating conflict resolution issues and providing in-person responses to critical incidents, ensuring ongoing student follow-up until reasonable care is provided.
