About The Position

A Half Summer Hero is a position for applicants who have Camp Kingfisher experience, either as a staff member, or at least two years as an LIT (Leader in Training). This position is intended for those who cannot commit for the entirety of the summer. A Half Summer Hero must be able to commit to work at least 4 weeks out of the summer. If the applicant is a former LIT, they must attend at least 75% of staff training. Former staff member attendance at staff training will be at the discretion of the Camp Directors. As the primary caregivers for each camper in their group, Camp Counselors must be fun, dynamic and safety conscious. Camp Counselors plan and implement daily schedules, lead activities and songs, coordinate with co-counselors, and communicate with parents. All staff at Camp Kingfisher are hired to: lead campers as a positive, caring role model provide campers with fun, positive outdoor learning experiences help campers grow and learn through challenges

Requirements

  • Willingness to work outdoors during the summer season
  • Must be able to lift over 20 pounds
  • Valid driver’s license or state issued ID
  • Experience (and passion for) teaching or working with children
  • Comfortable in an outdoor setting
  • Background in environmental education, natural history, education, childcare, or camps
  • Willingness to handle captive wildlife, training provided
  • Current tetanus shot or willingness to obtain one
  • Current First Aid/CPR certification, course provided

Responsibilities

  • Supervise groups of children grades rising K-7 th in an outdoor setting
  • Lead camper activities with excellence and enthusiasm
  • Develop and implement environmental education activities (hikes, animal demonstrations, science exploration activities) on a daily basis, program resources provided
  • Maintain high standards of health and safety in all activities for campers and staff
  • Clean camp facilities as needed/required
  • Handle captive wildlife daily in camp programs
  • Attend weekly camp staff meetings and trainings
  • Assist in program areas such as waterfront, pool, all camp activities, and arts and crafts as directed
  • Help support Camp Kingfishers aftercare program
  • Complete additional duties as assigned
  • Participate as a member of the camp staff team to deliver and supervise evening programing (older camper groups)
  • Contribute to verbal/written evaluations and communication as requested
  • Keeping track of and recording hours worked, requesting director’s approval for any additional hours prior to work
