About The Position

The Unit Leader works under the direction of camp leadership and is responsible for creating a positive camping experience for the campers in their care. They supervise Unit Counselor(s) and ensure the delivery of high-quality Girl Scout programming at the Hacienda Day Camp. They work collaboratively with other staff to supervise campers and ensure their safety, development, skill achievement, and overall well-being. The duties of a Camp Counselor frequently include outdoor activities in varying weather conditions; staff may be exposed to sun, wind, and rain outside of their immediate control.

Requirements

  • Minimum age 21; prior experience with children or youth programs required.
  • Must commit to a full summer position (non-traditional work schedule).
  • Ability to live and work in a high-temperature, outdoor, communal environment.
  • Strong leadership, organization, and communication skills.
  • Maintains professional boundaries with staff and campers.
  • Enthusiasm for working with children and supporting the Girl Scout mission.
  • Commitment to creating inclusive, safe, and empowering experiences for campers.
  • Must pass a criminal background check and complete mandatory reporter training.
  • CPR/First Aid certification required (American Red Cross or American Heart Association);
  • Willingness to participate in training, professional development, and ongoing feedback. Ability to lift a minimum of 20 pounds occasionally
  • Ability to successfully pass a Background Check and/or obtain an Arizona Fingerprint Care
  • Ability to arrange timely transportation to work locations at set times. If driving, proof of meeting Arizona State requirements regarding auto licensing, driver’s license, and liability insurance, if applicable.
  • Flexible and able to problem solve and self-direct
  • Capable of working under pressure and handling multiple demands/heavy volume

Nice To Haves

  • Previous camp experience preferred.
  • Advanced First Aid training preferred, but not required.
  • Lifeguard and food handler certifications preferred; food handler certification will be earned (at the expense of the council) before camp begins if not already completed.
  • Bilingual (English/Spanish) highly desirable.

Responsibilities

  • Supervise a camp unit of 10–30 youth and assigned staff under the guidance of the Camp Directors.
  • Model professionalism by using resources wisely, being punctual, and maintaining clear communication with staff, caregivers, and campers.
  • Plan, coordinate, and implement Girl Scout programming that promotes personal growth and a love of the outdoors. Ensure activities are age-appropriate and engaging.
  • Adapt quickly to changing schedules and camper needs.
  • Treat all campers, staff, and stakeholders with fairness and respect regardless of background or ability.
  • Mentor and support assigned staff or interns through constructive feedback and regular communication with Directors.
  • Ensure health, safety, and well-being standards are met; oversee unit cleanliness, sanitation, supplies, and equipment.
  • Maintain accurate unit records and required documentation for campers and staff.
  • Participate in all camp activities, including two one-night overnight camps and camp operations when campers are not present.
  • Attend all required trainings and meetings, on-site and off-site.
  • Follow the Council’s Safety and Risk Management Plan at all times.
  • Prioritize the safety and well-being of campers, coworkers, and self.
  • Foster a culture of learning by giving and receiving feedback respectfully.
  • Perform other duties as needed to support the mission of Girl Scouts of Southern Arizona.
