About The Position

American Conservation Experience is seeking 3 Habitat Monitoring Crew Leaders to lead field teams in New Mexico for the Bureau of Land Management's Assessment, Inventory, and Monitoring (AIM) program. This role involves outdoor work, data collection, and collaboration with resource specialists to inform land management decisions. Crew Leaders will oversee a team of technicians, ensuring safety and data quality while working in demanding environmental conditions.

Requirements

  • Degree in ecology, botany, soil science, range science, wildlife biology, natural resource management, biology, conservation biology, or related field
  • Minimum of 1 year experience identifying plants or soil horizons in the field, preferably with AIM protocols
  • Experience identifying plants or soils in the field using a dichotomous key
  • Experience conducting plant surveys using various monitoring protocols
  • Ability to read, interpret, and navigate using a GPS unit and topographic maps
  • Ability to use electronic tablets to record and manage data
  • Valid driver's license and clean driving record
  • Ability to safely operate 4x4 vehicles on rough, unpaved road conditions
  • Willingness to undergo a federal criminal background check and driving history check
  • Ability to work alone or in a small group with minimal supervision
  • Strong communication skills with team members and the public
  • Familiarity with Leave No Trace principles and attention to field safety
  • Basic tool, equipment, and vehicle maintenance knowledge
  • Willingness to work an irregular schedule with multiple days of travel
  • Capability to hike up to 3 miles and lift up to 50 lbs

Responsibilities

  • Monitor safety and morale of crew members
  • Collect vegetation data using line-point intercept and species inventory methods
  • Measure shrub density, foliar cover, canopy gap, and vegetation heights
  • Identify and describe soil horizons
  • Use GPS to navigate to off-trail sampling sites
  • Drive 4x4 vehicles in a backcountry setting
  • Conduct electronic data collection using a tablet and ArcGIS geo-database
  • Communicate with ACE and BLM staff
  • Ensure quality control of all data collected
