About The Position

The High-frequency Active Auroral Research Program (HAARP) is a leading research facility dedicated to the study of the ionosphere, utilizing the world's most advanced high-power, high-frequency (HF) transmitter. The primary instrument at HAARP is the Ionospheric Research Instrument, which consists of a phased array of 180 HF crossed-dipole antennas spread over 33 acres. This facility is capable of radiating 3.6 megawatts into the upper atmosphere and ionosphere, facilitating fundamental research into the physical processes occurring in the thermosphere and ionosphere, the highest layers of Earth's atmosphere. Located on the HAARP campus in Gakona, Alaska, this position is part of the Geophysical Institute's commitment to supporting the National Science Foundation's Subauroral Geophysical Observatory (SAGO). This research laboratory is focused on exploring Earth's upper atmosphere and geospace environment. Responsibilities will include assisting with power plant maintenance and operations, which encompasses preflight startup checklists, operational procedures, and shutdown processes. Candidates should have experience operating heavy equipment such as forklifts, graders, and brush mowers. Additionally, the candidate must possess strong problem-solving skills, including the ability to collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Proficiency in interpreting technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form is essential, as is the ability to manage various abstract and concrete variables. The role also requires the candidate to research, analyze, and resolve discrepancies related to parts, including purchases, shipments, and deliveries.
