About The Position

To develop each student's understanding of the relationship between good body function and exercise; to motivate each pupil to cultivate physical fitness, hygienic habits, and good social and emotional adjustment; to discover and develop talents of pupils in physical achievement; to develop strength, skill, agility, poise, and coordination in individual, dual, and team physical activities and sports, in accordance with each pupil's ability.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Physical Education or related field.
  • PA Teacher certification in Health and Physical Education.
  • Thorough understanding of the curricular elements of Physical Education, and a general knowledge of K-8 Physical Education curriculum.
  • Applicants should possess a love of Physical Education, teaching, and children as well as the desire to nurture and shape the lives of our students.
  • Appreciation of the developmental and age characteristics of the students in each grade.
  • Enthusiasm for the mission of the school and for working collaboratively with fellow faculty members.
  • PRIOR TO INTERVIEW: Clear records of Pennsylvania State Police Criminal Record Check (PATCH), Pennsylvania Child Abuse History, and Federal Bureau of Investigation Criminal Background Fingerprint Check as required under Commonwealth of Pennsylvania's Act 153 of 2014 (at least 1 year old.) As well as attendance at a Protecting God's Children class and Mandated Reporter Training.
  • Must be in good physical shape to do this job with the ability to be on your feet for extended periods of time. Must have the ability to walk, reach with arms and hands, climb and balance; some carrying, pushing, and/or pulling may be involved; as well as some stooping, kneeling, crouching or crawling; exhibit manual dexterity to handle or feel and to manipulate keys on a keyboard and dial a phone; to see and read a computer screen and printed material with or without vision aids; hear and understand speech at normal levels and on the telephone; speak in audible tones so that others may understand clearly in person and on the telephone; ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions; physical agility to lift up to 25 pounds.

Responsibilities

  • Design and implement PE classes for special needs students ages 4 – 21 that expose the students to a variety of activities, games, and sports; emphasize activities that promote lifelong physical fitness and promote teamwork and good sportsmanship.
  • Teaches knowledge and skills in physical fitness, health education, rhythm, and dance, and individual, dual, or team sports, utilizing appropriate learning activities.
  • Analyzes, demonstrates, and explains basic skills, knowledge, and strategies of formal sports, game rhythms, and fundamentals of body movement.
  • Provides individualized and small group instruction in order to adapt the curriculum to the needs of each pupil, to the extent feasible.
  • Provides appropriate safety instruction and makes safety checks on equipment and field areas to ensure the overall safety of pupils.
  • Maintains control of storage and use of school-owned property. Selects and requisitions uniforms, equipment, and instructional aids; maintains required inventory records.
  • Establishes and maintains standards of pupil behavior needed to provide an orderly, productive environment in the physical education areas.
  • Maintains professional competence through in-service education activities provided by Mercy School for Special Learning, and/or in self-selected professional growth activities.
  • Performs other duties as assigned by the Principal.
