The Authority is currently seeking Explosive Detection Canine (EOD K9) Handlers to join Georgia World Congress Center. Explosive Detection Canine Handlers are sworn police certified by the Georgia Peace Officer Standards and Training (P.O.S.T.) as a police officer responsible for the care, training, and deployment of an assigned canine to detect explosives, explosive materials, and related threats. This role ensures the safety and security of facilities, personnel, and the public by conducting proactive sweeps, responding to alerts, and supporting law enforcement and security operations.

Requirements

  • Officer must be currently employed and in “Good Standing” with employer.
  • Officer must have jurisdiction in this geographical area.
  • Must have agency approval to work extra job at GWCCA.
  • Officers must possess a current P.O.S.T. Certification and must be in “Good Standing” with P.O.S.T.
  • Valid Georgia Driver’s License.
  • P.O.S.T DATA REPORT/FACT SHEET from the GEORGIA P.O.S.T WEBSITE AND PBLE/PRPP CERTIFICATION MUST BE UPLOADED AND SUBMITTED WITH APPLICATION
  • Knowledge of modern law enforcement principles, practices, techniques, and equipment.
  • High degree of integrity and work ethic.
  • Knowledge of oral and written skills.
  • Detail oriented.
  • Assess, analyze, and manage risk factors in the face of uncertainty.
  • Ability to work an irregular work schedule as required to perform duties and responsibilities.
  • Ability to attend and successfully complete extended-length training to certify as a K9 detection team.
  • Maintain proficiency in use of personal computer (PC) and related software and be proficient in record-keeping.
  • Maintain knowledge of current trends and technological developments in the K-9 and Law Enforcement field.
  • Maintains proficiency and certification for self and K-9 in explosive detection in accordance with applicable laws and GWCCA policy.
  • Maintain a physical fitness regimen; be a non-smoker or agree not to smoke in the presence of the canine.
  • Have the ability to provide suitable care, feeding, grooming and living conditions for canine i.e. detached housing with a yard and ability to house an outdoor, secure kennel (kennel supplied by the Department).

  • Prior experience as a canine handler preferred; military, law enforcement, or security background strongly desired.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct explosive detection sweeps of venues, vehicles, cargo, luggage, packages, and other areas as assigned.
  • Maintain control, obedience, and readiness of the assigned canine.
  • Ensure proper care, feeding, grooming, exercise, and veterinary attention for the canine partner.
  • Conduct daily training sessions to sustain and enhance detection performance.
  • Respond to suspicious items or incidents and coordinate with law enforcement/security as required.
  • Complete detailed reports of sweeps, findings, and canine activity logs.
  • Follow all safety protocols and established security procedures.
  • Represent the organization with professionalism when interacting with clients, the public, and security officials.
  • Efficient in the principles and practices of effective interpersonal communication and good customer service.
  • Operates as K-9 handler to provide explosives detection screening of GWCCA deliveries, vehicles entering upon or adjacent to GWCCA property, sites of special events on GWCCA property, and routine patrol of grounds.
  • Handles K-9 when responding to special requests for explosive detection based on unusual or suspicious circumstances.
  • Responsible for all maintenance, care, handling and training of assigned K-9.
  • Patrols building with K-9 and reports unusual situations or unauthorized individuals.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
  • Works with assigned K-9 to maintain overall GWCCA security and to protect staff, visitors and facilities.
  • As a K-9 team, patrols and responds to incidents at GWCCA, Mercedes Benz Stadium or other facility as directed by the Chief of Police or his designee.
  • Provides emergency services and explosive detection capability.
