About The Position

The Gunsmith II shall design, fabricate, modify, repair, and service foreign and domestic firearms, weapons, and accessories. This position will work on external/internal and terminal ballistics; build custom pistols and rifles, as well as other types of weapons systems with minimal supervision. The Gunsmith II shall also perform major repairs on foreign and domestic standard and non-standard small arms weapons; be able to build either custom pistols or rifles with little or no supervision; possesses excellent knowledge of gun-smithing tools and procedures; and possesses moderate knowledge of firearms operating principles and ballistics. Candidates shall possess a thorough understanding of firearm operation principles; have moderate knowledge of internal/external ballistic theories; be able to fabricate special jigs, fixtures, and other special tooling with some supervision; read and understand blueprint drawings; and work from those drawings under direct supervision. The Gunsmith II can perform as primary instructor on most standard and non-standard small arms weapon systems. Candidates shall possess knowledge of required tools (i.e. hammers, punches, files, stones, etc.) and gauges needed to perform assigned duties. The Gunsmith II should possess knowledge of basic shop safety procedures needed to work in a small arms environment, and will perform support functions for the shop. Other responsibilities include disassembly, repair, and replace parts; clean, service, and reassembly of a variety of automatic and manual weapons such as electrically and manually fired machine guns that have single or multi-barrels, rifles, automatic pistols, revolvers, grenade launchers, and commercial/foreigner weapons such as shotguns. The Gunsmith II will perform repair work on weapon system components such as firing pins, springs, trigger mechanisms, shell ejectors, sights, bolts, stocks, hammers, barrels, solenoids, etc. The candidate will straighten bent parts; files burrs; perform precise timing alignment and adjustments; and perform bore scoping and pullover gauging of cannon tubes. The Gunsmith II will clean and refinish weapons as required; and apply phosphate and bluing solutions. This worker will make operational checks and test fires as required to assure accuracy, safety, and ease of operation. The Gunsmith will assist military unit personnel, inspection teams, and equipment specialists as required in all aspects of small arms repair, maintenance, and problem solving. As required, this worker repairs and adjusts weapons to national match standards. Performs all other position related duties as assigned or requested.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Completed 92Y Unit Armorer Certification Course: 551-F29 (MTT-A/G) or equivalent civilian training.
  • Experienced in military logistics and security requirements/regulations associated with management of small arms.
  • Attendance at a formal one to two year accredited in-house gun-smithing course, or equivalent work experience with a minimum 2-3 years' experience.
  • Knowledge of U.S. Army procedures and logistics information systems.
  • Be thoroughly familiar with US Military Technical Manuals (TMs).
  • Strong customer service skills.
  • Ability to perform various production control activities including gathering and filing records, reporting on use of materials, and monitoring customer requests.
  • Strong communication skills, both verbal and written.
  • Must be able to walk and stand on level and/or inclined surfaces for extended periods throughout the day.
  • Must be able to type using a standard keyboard to communicate through e-mail and various software applications.
  • Must be able to lift/push/pull minimum of 30 pounds.
  • Must be able to work in a shop where the environment is drafty, noisy, and dirty.
  • May be exposed to extreme noise from operating equipment.
  • Must have or be able to obtain a forklift license.
  • NACI/CAC Required and obtain a Common Access card (CAC).

Nice To Haves

  • Armor certification or Gun Smith certification(s) is preferred.
  • Experience working with U. S. Army combat and tactical equipment preferred.
  • A valid US Army MOS 45 Bravo, 93 Juliet or USMC MOS 2111 certificate and/or GSA/OEM Factory Armorer certifications for required weapons.
