About The Position

The Louisville, Kentucky site of BAE Systems is actively seeking a Mechanical Inspector supporting the gun barrel and machining shops. In this role as a Gun Barrel Inspector, you will support the Second Shift on a 4/10 Schedule with typical hours of 4:00 p.m to 2:30 a.m. This is a union position within the IAMAW 830 union. As a Gun Barrel Inspector, you will be responsible for performing in-process inspection and final acceptance of gun barrel product, while providing support to other programs onsite as needed. You will inspect material for conformance to dimensional requirements and physical characteristics. You'll perform inspections using a variety of standard and complex precision instruments, testing devices, and highly sophisticated equipment.

Requirements

  • Typically requires a High School diploma (or GED) and four years related work experience, or the overall equivalent.
  • Experience with AnsiY14.5 GD&T and/or the ability to apply appropriate algebraic, geometric, and trigonometric functions to blueprint dimensions in the inspection of complex parts.
  • Must have knowledge and ability to set, use, and read precision layout and measuring instruments.
  • Must be proficient in the assembly, maintenance and use of inspection equipment such as fleet star gage and bore scope as required.
  • Must be capable of completing all necessary documents and records in a timely and accurate manner for the manufacture and shipment of product.
  • Must have the ability, confidence, and self-motivation to apply talents independently and with good judgment.
  • Must have the ability to read and interpret multi-paged complex blueprints.
  • Must be proficient in Microsoft Excel, Word, and PowerPoint.
  • Able to support 2nd Shift and overtime as needed.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience working independently, especially on an off-shift.
  • CNC Machining experience.

Responsibilities

  • Analyzing documentation, such as drawings, military specifications and standards, procurement inspection plans (PIP), etc., to determine the level of inspection and the best method of inspection and tooling required to perform the inspection.
  • Verifying TDP (Technical Data Package) quality requirements and reporting results per NAVSEA instruction 8300.4A.
  • Analyzing quality related issues which may arise and providing recommendations for solutions. This must be accomplished in a timely manner and through use of effective communication skills and application of appropriate technical ability.
  • Monitoring all QVP (quality verification plan) documents and all barrel documentation from raw material to finished product; maintaining accurate shipping records.
  • Effectively communicating with various levels of personnel, e.g. program managers, machinists, engineers, management staff, external customers (e.g. ISEA and DCM), etc.
  • Applying UID (unique identification) markings per knowledge of UID requirements and process of application.
  • Presenting all applicable documents to customer and obtaining final DD250.
