About The Position

The Guidance Counselor position at the Department of Justice involves implementing a comprehensive counseling program within the education department of a correctional facility. The counselor will collaborate with various agencies to promote educational equity and assess the effectiveness of counseling services provided to offenders.

Requirements

• U.S. Citizenship is required.
• A degree with at least 24 semester hours in relevant areas such as guidance and counseling, adult education, or curriculum development.
• Experience in serving as a school counselor and delivering evidence-based counseling practices.
• Experience in developing and delivering in-service training to school counselors and faculty.
• Ability to administer, score, and interpret academic tests and develop intervention strategies.

Nice To Haves

• Experience supervising graduate practicum students.
• Knowledge of the American School Counselors Association (ASCA) standards.

Responsibilities

• Implement a comprehensive counseling program for the education department.
• Lead and advocate for educational equity and access for offenders in collaboration with the Bureau of Prisons and outside agencies.
• Provide guidance and support to offenders in completing the mandatory Literacy Program.
• Create and document the progress of offenders' counseling plans and analyze assessment results to reflect their progress toward individual goals.
• Regularly assess the counseling program's effectiveness in helping offenders meet educational, career-technical, and reentry goals.
