About The Position

The North Carolina Zoo is expanding, making this an exciting opportunity to join our team. We are seeking a dynamic, efficient, and enthusiastic individual to serve as a Guest Services - Environmental Services team member. In this role, Environmental Services team members deliver an outstanding guest experience while maintaining a safe, sanitary, and environmentally responsible (“Green”) setting for all guests and employees. They work under the direct supervision of the Environmental Services Branch Manager and Team Leaders to support the Zoo’s cleanliness and sustainability standards. Key Responsibilities include but are not limited to: General housekeeping duties, including but not limited to sweeping, mopping, scrubbing, pressure washing, removing webs, and cleaning and sanitizing surfaces such as floors, walls, tables, countertops, doorknobs, handles, windows, and other glass surfaces. Cleaning and maintaining the Zoo’s five miles of walking trails, including removing trash from pathways, natural areas, recycling bins, and trash containers. Cleaning common areas within Zoo office buildings and exhibit facilities. Cleaning and sanitizing public restrooms using appropriate cleaning supplies and chemicals. Restocking public restroom supplies, including toilet paper, soap, hand sanitizer, paper towels, and feminine products. Cleaning spills and biohazards in accordance with safety protocols. Sorting recycling and compost materials. Assisting with setup and breakdown for special events as needed. Working in a role with possible occupational exposure (Category B employee) to human bloodborne pathogens; must follow Universal Protection Precautions and Bloodborne Pathogens Guidelines. Working in environments with possible exposure to hazardous chemicals (e.g., chlorine bleach, cleaning agents). Ensuring workspaces, Environmental Services vehicles, and storage areas remain clean, organized, and safe. Assisting with additional duties and supporting other Guest Services areas as needed or assigned.

Requirements

  • Must be at least 16 years of age.
  • Work schedule will include flexible shifts including weekends and holidays.
  • Must meet DNCR Fleet Safety Guidelines and have ability to obtain and maintain a valid driver's license issued from within the United States or be able to obtain one within 90 days of employment.
  • Able to work both outdoors and indoors under all environmental conditions.
  • Able to interact with and work within large crowds.
  • Able to use two‑way radios and phone communication systems.
  • Able to walk and stand for the majority of the work shift.
  • Able to lift and drag at least 30 lbs. independently.
  • Able to drive a variety of utility vehicles and trucks.
  • Able to complete weekly timesheets and use basic computer programs for training.
  • Able to operate a variety of equipment and tools required for daily tasks.
  • Physically able to walk, stand, kneel, squat, bend, lift, and push while performing various duties.
  • Excellent visual acuity and hearing.
  • Able to work outdoors in extreme weather conditions typical of Central NC (heat, rain, or cold) and stand or walk for extended periods.
  • Expect exposure to outdoor allergens, dust, fumes, odors, loud noises, motion, and vibrations.
  • Able to navigate paved, rough, and uneven pathways.
  • Education and/or experience in housekeeping work that is directly related to the job.
