GENERAL PURPOSE Responsible for developing, evaluating, and improving assembly processes by applying knowledge of product design, assembly methods, fixturing, automation and tooling designs. Work with internal teams and equipment suppliers to aid in process improvements to current production lines and design for assembly methods for new product launches. Support company objectives for Safety, Quality, Cost and Reliability. In a developing capacity and under direct supervision, applies basic engineering principles, concepts, theories, and techniques in support of business objectives and may provide fundamental engineering leadership and expertise. May conduct feasibility studies, determine manpower and cost estimates, and develop engineering criteria. Performs primary analyses to develop design options or recommendations for structures, systems and components. May apply originality, ingenuity and knowledge of other disciplines in solving basic technical issues. Emphasis will be placed on team participation, ability to plan, and ability to achieve results on assigned projects.

Requirements

  • B.S. in Mechanical or Manufacturing Engineering.
  • Engineering/Technical degree from an accredited program or 2-year technical degree in related field with 3 years of applicable engineering experience
  • Basic knowledge in Lean principles and application.
  • Basic knowledge in the use of common office automation, communication, software and tools, Herman Miller mainframe applications and engineering related software.
  • Must have basic problem solving ability and be able to apply engineering expertise to problem solving.
  • Strong problem-solving skills using engineering methodology
  • High sense of urgency to drive quick results
  • Ability to use originality and ingenuity to apply solutions
  • Excellent analytical skills, verbal & written communication skills
  • Ability to provide technical leadership and guidance to the manufacturing areas through the use of cross-functional teams.
  • Must be able to communicate effectively with people at various levels including production, engineering, and management and to be able to work well with and develop a partnering relationship with other team members.
  • Strong Computer and MS Office working knowledge including MillerKnoll mainframe applications and engineering related software.
  • At the direction of supervision must be able to effectively react to changing priorities and work flow and be able to anticipate, recognize, and respond effectively to changes which affect project plans.
  • Must have an overall basic business sense and understand how decisions impact business results.

Nice To Haves

  • 4-8 years of experience in manufacturing working with areas such as upholstery and production assembly
  • Experience in Kaizen, continuous improvement and formal problem solving.
  • Experience in defining and implementing cell layout, plant layout and ergonomically designed workstations
  • Exposure to project management concepts may be essential for some assignments.
  • AutoCAD and SolidWorks preferred

Responsibilities

  • Performs additional responsibilities as requested to achieve business objectives.
  • The Operations Engineer analyzes the value stream and identifies opportunities to eliminate non-value-added steps in the process.
  • Embraces continuous improvement methodology
  • Support the following lean techniques where applicable: 5S, waste identification and elimination, value stream mapping, Kaizen, error proofing, one piece flow, set-up time reduction, Kanban, balanced workflow, PFMEA and other concepts.
  • The Operations Engineer will provide team leadership support for process improvement projects, safety, quality, cost, and reliability.
  • Support required activities associated with Assembly changes or new seating product launches.
  • Monitor and improve fixtures, tools and methods to meet productivity, specifications and quality standards.
  • Research and recommend new tools, automation and methodologies for product/process changes focused on seating assembly.
  • Evaluate existing machinery and processes to recommend improvements that enhance both operator performance and ergonomics/safety of overall production.
  • Optimize floor layout, material flow manufacturing efficiencies, floor space utilization and overhead.
  • Strong floor coverage and operations support needed.
  • Performs additional responsibilities as requested to achieve business objectives.
  • Seeks and receives mentoring from senior level and engineering leadership.
  • Seeks approval of budget owner using appropriate request process
