Responsible for evaluating and analyzing group insurance experience and community-rated fully and self-insured accounts. This role involves assessing the financial and operational aspects of group insurance proposals to determine coverage eligibility, pricing, and terms. The role operates with minimal supervision and is expected to be thoroughly versed in all concepts of claims analysis, claims projection, and benefit analysis. Consistently demonstrates a sound and thorough understanding of all Underwriting concepts to produce work with broad independence.

  • Review and analyze group insurance accounts, including medical, dental, and other health-related plans.
  • Evaluate risks associated with group applications, considering factors such as demographics, claims history, and market trends.
  • Assume full responsibility for some Underwriting standard processes as assigned by the manager.
  • Develop and present underwriting recommendations based on thorough analysis and risk assessment.
  • Collaborate with brokers, agents, and healthcare providers to gather necessary information and clarify underwriting requirements.
  • Comfortable collaborating with care management staff to leverage clinical data to improve underwriting projections.
  • Train and/or mentor junior Underwriters.
  • May help direct the workflow of more junior members of the team.
  • Produce high-quality, error-free analyses that are reliable and understandable.
  • Produce client-specific reporting promptly, ensuring data is consistent with prior distribution and other related Underwriting material. This reporting function will serve to support renewal underwriting as well as regular and ad-hoc client reporting.
  • Regularly attend external client and consultant meetings to explain, defend, and negotiate premiums and Underwriting methodologies for both renewing and prospective clients, rarely requiring support from the Underwriting manager.
  • Ensure compliance with regulatory standards and internal policies throughout the underwriting process.
  • Bachelor's Degree required (experience can be accepted in lieu of degree)
  • At least 3-5 years of experience in group underwriting, preferably within the healthcare or insurance sector, required
  • Excellent analytical and quantitative skills, with the ability to interpret complex data.
  • Strong attention to detail and accuracy in evaluations and recommendations.
  • Proficient in underwriting software and Microsoft Office Suite, particularly Excel.
  • Effective communication skills, both written and verbal, to convey complex information clearly.
  • Comfortable presenting and defending rating methodology to clients and consultant partners.
  • Strong interpersonal skills to build and maintain relationships with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Ability to work independently and manage multiple projects simultaneously.
