About The Position

As part of the Youth Services Department, Group Leaders support Grand Street Settlement’s mission to promote growth, leadership, and positive self-image among youth. This role is responsible for creating and maintaining a safe, engaging, and structured afterschool environment. Group leaders plan and facilitate various activities, including academic enrichment, recreational programming, team-building exercises, and theme-based lessons. They play a key role in fostering a positive group dynamic and ensuring meaningful youth engagement.

Requirements

High school diploma required; college degree preferred
Minimum of 3 years of experience working with youth (volunteer experience acceptable)
Experience designing and facilitating curriculum or structured activities
Demonstrated experience working with diverse youth populations
Strong organizational and administrative skills
Ability to manage multiple tasks and work effectively under pressure
Energetic, personable, and enthusiastic with strong leadership skills
Excellent communication skills with the ability to motivate and engage youth
NYSDOH Fingerprinting
New York State Clearance Review Background Check
Three (3) professional references (at least one from a former supervisor)
Physical exam with updated TB test (fees may apply)
$25 fee for NY State Clearance Review (if offered position)
CPR/AED and First Aid certifications preferred

Responsibilities

Complete all required afterschool training in accordance with school-age child care regulations
Supervise and engage groups of youth in a safe and structured environment
Address behavioral issues through appropriate intervention and problem-solving
Maintain proper staff-to-student ratios during all activities and trips
Design and implement project-based, age-appropriate curriculum
Facilitate daily activities aligned with program themes
Follow all schedules, procedures, and program expectations
Collaborate effectively with team members to ensure program success
Foster a positive, inclusive, and cohesive group environment
Ensure the safety and well-being of all participants at all times
Maintain and monitor first aid supplies and safety equipment
Keep accurate medical and emergency contact information for all participants
Document and report all incidents and injuries
Complete attendance and required program reports
Adhere to all safety plans, regulations, and organizational policies
Communicate regularly and professionally with parents/guardians
Complete all required documentation in a timely and accurate manner
Model professionalism, including reliability, punctuality, and preparedness
Assist with supervision and mentorship of junior staff, as needed
Perform additional duties as assigned
