About The Position

As part of the Youth Services Department, Group Leaders support Grand Street Settlement’s mission to promote growth, leadership, and positive self-image among youth. This role is responsible for creating and maintaining a safe, engaging, and structured afterschool environment. Group leaders plan and facilitate various activities, including academic enrichment, recreational programming, team-building exercises, and theme-based lessons. They play a key role in fostering a positive group dynamic and ensuring meaningful youth engagement.

Requirements

  • High school diploma required; college degree preferred
  • Minimum of 3 years of experience working with youth (volunteer experience acceptable)
  • Experience designing and facilitating curriculum or structured activities
  • Demonstrated experience working with diverse youth populations
  • Strong organizational and administrative skills
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks and work effectively under pressure
  • Energetic, personable, and enthusiastic with strong leadership skills
  • Excellent communication skills with the ability to motivate and engage youth
  • NYSDOH Fingerprinting
  • New York State Clearance Review Background Check
  • Three (3) professional references (at least one from a former supervisor)
  • Physical exam with updated TB test (fees may apply)
  • $25 fee for NY State Clearance Review (if offered position)
  • CPR/AED and First Aid certifications preferred

Responsibilities

  • Complete all required afterschool training in accordance with school-age child care regulations
  • Supervise and engage groups of youth in a safe and structured environment
  • Address behavioral issues through appropriate intervention and problem-solving
  • Maintain proper staff-to-student ratios during all activities and trips
  • Design and implement project-based, age-appropriate curriculum
  • Facilitate daily activities aligned with program themes
  • Follow all schedules, procedures, and program expectations
  • Collaborate effectively with team members to ensure program success
  • Foster a positive, inclusive, and cohesive group environment
  • Ensure the safety and well-being of all participants at all times
  • Maintain and monitor first aid supplies and safety equipment
  • Keep accurate medical and emergency contact information for all participants
  • Document and report all incidents and injuries
  • Complete attendance and required program reports
  • Adhere to all safety plans, regulations, and organizational policies
  • Communicate regularly and professionally with parents/guardians
  • Complete all required documentation in a timely and accurate manner
  • Model professionalism, including reliability, punctuality, and preparedness
  • Assist with supervision and mentorship of junior staff, as needed
  • Perform additional duties as assigned
