About The Position

PRIMARY PURPOSE/GENERAL DESCRIPTION: The Group Fitness Instructor is responsible for the safe and effective instruction of group exercise classes for participants with varying fitness levels in a fitness or aquatic setting. This position ensures the safe practice of exercises and skills of the members/guests through observation, correction, assistance, and answering questions. The instructor maintains the cleanliness and orderliness of the facility and stays educated on best practices, class design, format, and innovations in the industry. Positions include strength training, weightlifting, boot camp, dance, spinning, aqua fitness, kickboxing, Zumba, HIIT, yoga, Pilates, Water Safety Instruction (Learn to Swim Program), etc. DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES : ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS : This information is intended to be descriptive of the key responsibilities of the position. Maintains excellent communication and social skills to effectively teach and provide advice to all guests and members in need of additional explanation. Identifies and implements the components of a total physical fitness program to promote healthy lifestyles. Through instruction of proper form and alignment, demonstrates, describes, and executes the movements using verbal and non-verbal cues for different group fitness or aquatic (Learn to Swim) classes. Modifies and corrects form and alignment appropriately. Explains and executes variations of intensity and progressions of movements and exercises for group fitness classes. Explains, demonstrates, and addresses safety variables and methods for injury avoidance. Explains and demonstrates warm-up movements, cardiovascular, resistance, flexibility, and cool-down exercises. Utilizes functional equipment in group exercise classes (hand weights, balls, etc.) Maintains the facility’s equipment to a high standard in order to continually provide a clean and fully functional facility for our members and guests. Provides coverage for other fitness instructors while on vacation in order to maintain normal class scheduling for members and guests if certified in the class specialty. Maintains professional ethics and compliance with all Tiernan Field House rules and regulations. Keeps current with industry trends, insights, professional development opportunities, and relevant events. Active support for the College’s Principles of Community and Institutional Values in the performance of job duties.

Requirements

  • Identifies the components of a comprehensive fitness or aquatic (Learn to Swim) program through instruction of proper form and alignment.
  • Describes, demonstrates, and executes the movements, cues, and a variety of intensities for different group fitness or aquatic learn to swim (Water Safety Instruction) classes.
  • Explains, demonstrates, and executes a variety of movements, and intensities of exercises and skills for group fitness and aquatic (Learn to Swim) classes.
  • Addresses safety concerns using modifications, variables, and methods for injury avoidance.
  • Explains and demonstrates various warm-up movements, cardio-vascular training, resistance training, and flexibility exercises as appropriate for the class being taught.
  • Properly utilizes functional equipment in group exercise and aquatic (Learn to Swim) classes (hand weights, balls, kickboards, pull buoys, etc.).
  • Ability to work with patrons or guests of all ages, including infants and children, and their parents or guardians, specifically for aquatic learn to swim (Water Safety Instruction) classes.
  • Associate or bachelor’s degree is preferred in a related field such as exercise science, physical education, and kinesiology, or any combination of education, training, or experience that provides the required knowledge, skills, and ability to perform the job.
  • Minimum of 0-3 years of group exercise or aquatic learn to swim (Water Safety Instruction) experience in a recreation, collegiate, public, or private fitness industry setting.
  • Group fitness instructor certification needed in one of the following: AFAA (Aerobics and Fitness Association of America), AFPA (American Fitness Professionals and Associates), ACE (The American Council on Exercise), ACSM (American College of Sports Medicine), NAFC (National Association for Fitness Certification) NCSM (National College of Sports Medicine), NSPA (National Strength Professionals Association), ARC (American Red Cross) or similar certification through an accredited teaching and training organization.
  • Specialty certification for group fitness classes (Zumba, Pilates, spinning, kickboxing, etc.) and weightlifting or aquatic (Learn to Swim) that aligns with the classes being taught.
  • Maintains certification through continuing education credits by attending workshops on an annual basis.
  • Current CPR, First Aid, and AED certifications are required.
