About The Position

The Campus Recreation Fitness Program strives to encourage a healthy, balanced lifestyle to all participants through inspiration, teamwork, and positivity. Our instructors and trainers are a team dedicated to getting people moving together. As a fitness team member, you will be exposed to educational topics around exercise science and programming, team building, and leadership. Your entry into teaching fitness or training clients follows a clearly structured shadowing process (usually lasting one semester) to ensure you have the knowledge, skills, and abilities to deliver impactful movement-based experiences.

Requirements

  • MUST BE A STUDENT to apply.
  • MUST graduate NO EARLIER than December, 2026.

  • MUST INCLUDE A COVER LETTER speaking to your desire and ability to be a Group Exercise Instructor for Campus Recreation and what types of classes you would like to invest yourself in. If already certified, speak to your experience. Applications without a cover letter will NOT be considered.

  • Holding a current Fitness Certification is NOT required to apply but MUST BE OBTAINED within the first semester of employment while completing the shadowing process.

Responsibilities

  • Obtain and maintain necessary fitness certifications within the first 6 months of employment.
  • Create a welcoming and inclusive group exercise environment and ensure that every participant has a positive movement-based experience.
  • Design and implement safe, effective, and enjoyable group fitness classes.
  • Have a solid understanding of exercise science, class program design anatomy, and wellness principles.
  • Must be familiar with current UW Campus Recreation Fitness class offerings.
  • Provide personalized attention and customer service to class participants and Campus Recreation patrons.
  • Display a positive attitude and strong communication skills.
  • Utilize scheduling and fitness software.
  • Attend and participate in monthly staff meetings.
  • Obtain or show proof of CPR/1st Aid.
  • Assist with special programs/workshops/fairs.
  • Assist with cleaning tasks and other duties as assigned.
