About The Position

This position supports the work of the Y, a leading nonprofit, charitable organization committed to strengthening community through youth development, healthy living and social responsibility. Under the guidance and supervision of the Fitness Coordinator, the Group Exercise Instructor is responsible for instructing group classes in a safe, enjoyable, and positive environment that welcomes people of all skill and fitness levels. Effectively build community within the class. Modify class as needed to meet varied health, ability, and cultural needs.

Requirements

  • At least 18 years of age.
  • Alarm/Emergency Procedures training within 90 days of hire and annually thereafter.
  • CPR, First Aid and Child Abuse Prevention training within 90 days of hire and biannually thereafter.
  • Ability to relate effectively to diverse groups of people from all social and economic segments of the community.
  • Ability to solve practical problems and work through situations of varying gravity.
  • Ability to successfully conduct classes and activities.
  • Ability to perform all physical aspects of the position; including leading class, walking, standing, bending, reaching, and lifting.
  • Evening availability required.

Responsibilities

  • Lead fun, energizing, safe and educational group classes as directed by the Fitness Director, to accomplish the YMCA mission and goals.
  • Ask and answer questions from program participants and members to support them in achieving their goals related to health & well-being, within scope of practice.
  • Maintain working knowledge of wellness and trends to provide effective information and support to members.
  • Build effective, authentic relationships with members; helps members and program participants connect with each other and the Y.
  • Observe and adjust the approach to support all participants’ capabilities, physical conditions, health and culture.
  • Keep accurate class attendance records.
  • Follows YMCA policies and procedures; responds to emergency situations.
  • Attain relevant online trainings through LCDC as assigned by Fitness Director
  • Pursue/participate in ongoing continuing education training relevant to required trainings.
  • Participate in the annual campaign by giving, campaigning or both
  • Attend all staff meetings and other required trainings
  • Adhere to policies related to boundaries with consumers.
  • Attend required abuse risk management training.
  • Adhere to procedures related to managing high-risk activities and supervising consumers.
  • Report suspicious or inappropriate behaviors and policy violations.
  • Follow mandated abuse reporting requirements.
