About The Position

Instructs group classes, providing excellent service to members in a safe, enjoyable, and positive environment that promotes member wellness and engagement in accordance with YMCA policies and procedures.

Requirements

  • Is at least 18 years of age or older.
  • May have less than one year of experience in teaching group exercise classes or one or more years of group exercise participation.
  • Must pass a group exercise audition based upon the format(s) of group exercise instruction for which the instructor is being hired.
  • Must possess certifications approved by the FCYMCA (eg, Les Mills, Barre, Yoga, Zumba) prior to teaching the designated format.
  • Must possess a high degree of human-relations skills, must be able to facilitate class interaction and socialization, and should be considered a team player by members, co-workers, and management staff.
  • Exemplify YMCA ideals and leadership qualities.
  • Possess ability to handle multiple tasks, to work independently, and to problem-solve
  • Possess effective time-management skills.
  • Possess strong customer-service skills and personal commitment to service and hospitality.
  • Pass a criminal background and drug-screening check.
  • Possesses a current CPR/AED/First Aid/O2 certification through ASHI (American Safety and Health Institute), OR obtains the ASHI certification within 60 days of hire. Certifications are kept current, with all updated licenses uploaded via Y-Link to LCDC.
  • Ability to: Conduct classes and activities relating to fitness.
  • Perform all physical aspects of the position; including walking, standing, bending, reaching, and lifting up to 50

Responsibilities

  • Leads energizing, safe, motivating, and educational group classes, as directed by the branch supervisor, to accomplish the YMCA mission and goals.
  • Is knowledgeable and stays updated on current issues and trends related to group fitness and wellness programs.
  • Puts members first by engaging with them before and after class, welcoming new members to classes, and addressing questions and concerns with exceptional service and adequate follow through in a timely manner.
  • Assists as needed in all aspects of the YMCA and its community.
  • Secures his/her own music and selects music that is suitable for a family setting.
  • Meets class participation goal set for Association standards, contributing to the member retention rate for the branch.
  • Knows, understands, and consistently applies the FCYMCA risk and safety guidelines, best practices, and branch emergency procedure.
  • Responds appropriately to emergency situations, reporting all incidents to direct supervisor with appropriate follow-up in a timely manner.
  • Obtains and maintains access to Y-Link (link.ymca.net), YMCA's LCDC (Learning and Career Development Center), and to UKG Workforce Ready.
  • Possesses a current CPR/AED/First Aid/O2 certification through ASHI (American Safety and Health Institute), OR obtains the ASHI certification within 60 days of hire. Certifications are kept current, with all updated licenses uploaded via Y-Link to LCDC.
  • Maintains all group exercise certifications, keeping them current by meeting continuing education requirements or in alignment with certification requirements.
  • Secures his/her own substitute instructor in a timely manner using the GroupExPRO App or other process outlined by the Associations if he/she is unable to teach a YMCA class. Ensures that substitute is approved by management before being relieved of responsibility for the class.
  • Logs class attendance in GroupExPRO within 24 hours of when a class is taught. Class attendance may be logged via the GroupExPRO Instructor App or GroupExPRO website.
  • Logs in to GroupExPRO a minimum of two times/week to check for facility updates, subbing opportunities, and other important information.
  • Logs in to UKG Workforce Ready to log all worked hours by 11:59 p.m. on the final Saturday of a pay period.
  • Refrains from diagnosing injuries, offering medical advice, and dispensing or endorsing any and all commercial health products, especially nutritional supplements, vitamins, performance-enhancing substances, and/or pain relievers.
