About The Position

The Group Exercise Instructor reports to the Health and Wellness Director and works with other Wellness staff to instruct group exercise classes in a safe, enjoyable, and positive environment that welcomes all skill and fitness levels. The instructor is responsible for effectively building community within the class and modifying the class as needed to meet varied health, ability, and cultural needs. The YMCA is actively seeking a group exercise instructor who can lead in developing sound healthy habits with members through engaging leadership in classes. Applicants are being accepted for all varieties of group exercise offerings as the YMCA continues to build its offerings to meet the needs of its growing members.

Requirements

  • At least one year of experience in a Group Exercise setting.
  • NCCA accredited certification (e.g., ACE, AFFA, NASM, NSCA, ISSA).
  • Current certification required if teaching a specific group exercise format (e.g., Yoga, Spin, Les Mills Body Pump and Body Combat).
  • Experience in health and wellness programming and group instruction.
  • Understanding of internal and external marketing/special events.
  • Ability to interpret, carry out, and implement the mission and goals of the YMCA into classes/programs.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with adults, youth, teens, seniors, and special populations.
  • CPR/AED and First Aid certifications.

Nice To Haves

  • Degree in Exercise Science or Physical Education preferred but not required.

Responsibilities

  • Leads energizing, fun, safe, and educational group classes as directed by the supervisor.
  • Asks and answers questions from program participants and members to support them in achieving their health and well-being goals.
  • Maintains working knowledge of wellness trends through YUSA courses and external training.
  • Builds effective, authentic relationships with members and helps them connect with each other and the YMCA.
  • Observes and adjusts approach to support all participants’ capabilities, physical conditions, health, and culture.
  • Celebrates achievements of program participants related to program or personal goals.
  • Keeps accurate class attendance records through online Group Exercise Management software.
  • Follows YMCA policies and procedures and responds to emergency situations.
  • Resolves member issues professionally and in alignment with YMCA values.
