About the Team The People Tech organization is at a pivotal point of scale and transformation. With rapidly expanding global charters, the growth of the IDC technology and services footprint, and the simultaneous stabilization and maturation of People Services, there is a strategic need for a senior leader who can provide unified direction, governance, and leadership across these interconnected areas. This role is a replacement position for a GD who has taken up a different role in the organization. The role will carry functional accountability for the global Wellbeing and GTA portfolios—owning strategy, delivery, and outcomes across the worldwide organization. In addition, the role will have locational responsibility for the People Tech and People Services teams in IDC, providing site leadership, performance management, and talent development for the local organization. About the Role The Group Director, Software Engineering – People Technology provides senior technology and location leadership across People Technology and Services, spanning Wellbeing, GTA, and People Services. The leader will set global strategy, drive operational excellence, and enable high-performing teams across large, multi-disciplinary organizations. With accountability for scale, stability, and outcomes, this role serves as a critical connector between global People Tech strategy and local execution—building strong leadership pipelines, mature operating models, and technology-enabled impact that supports Walmart’s people and business priorities. Global Leadership – Wellbeing & GTA Owns the global technology strategy, roadmap, operations, and delivery for Wellbeing and GTA. Leads 250+ associate global organization, aligning strategy, execution, and measurable outcomes with People Tech, HR, and business stakeholders. Ensures seamless integration of technology, product, and service outcomes across functions, platforms, and time zones. Drives operational alignment, clarity of ownership, and consistent execution with global product, HR, and business partners. Establishes and enforces strong governance, quality assurance, and adherence to global standards. IDC Site Leadership – People Tech & Services Serves as IDC Site Leader for People Tech, representing and enabling 450+ technology associates. Mentors Directors and senior leaders across Engineering, Product, and Services to build a strong leadership bench. Acts as the strategic connector between global People Tech leadership and IDC delivery teams. Drives local talent development, succession planning, performance management, and leadership readiness across tech and services. Shapes a high-engagement leadership culture focused on capability building, accountability, and organizational health. Represents the IDC leadership perspective in global forums, ensuring clear, bidirectional communication and alignment. People Services – Stabilization & Maturity Leadership Provides location leadership for 450+ People Services associates in IDC. Leads People Services through stabilization and transition from setup to a mature, scalable operating model. Ensures operational excellence across productivity, quality, governance, and service delivery, enabled by technology optimization. Serves as senior local escalation point, removing blockers and ensuring alignment with global People Services leadership. Drives process re-engineering, automation, and innovation in partnership with People Tech. Balances global strategy with local execution realities to achieve sustainable maturity and long-term performance.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree (Masters, or Ph D preferred)
  • 12+ years of software engineering experience in a related industry
  • 7+ years of experience managing and mentoring software engineering teams
  • 4+ years of experience managing other managers
  • Demonstrated history of building successful software products at scale
  • Demonstrated history of building successful software products leveraging Gen AI technology
  • Strong system architecture, problem-solving, and data-driven decision-making skills
  • Ability to influence business and product teams with strong collaboration skills
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, adept at communicating with executive levels, peers, and subordinates
  • Demonstrated history of customer obsession and an agile mindset
  • Strong sense of ownership and urgency

Nice To Haves

  • Master’s degree in computer science, computer engineering, computer information systems, software engineering, or related area and 6 years' experience in software engineering or related area
