About The Position

Fayetteville Public Works Commission is seeking a reliable and safety‑focused individual to join our Electric Construction and Maintenance Department Boring Team as a Groundworker. This role supports construction and maintenance activities for underground and overhead electric distribution systems and plays a key part in maintaining safe, efficient field operations. This position is ideal for candidates with construction experience who enjoy hands‑on, outdoor work and supporting skilled utility crews. Key Responsibilities Support electric construction crews with daily field activities and job site preparation. Load and unload equipment, materials, and tools on and off work vehicles. Prepare and supply crews with necessary tools, materials, and equipment. Clean and maintain vehicles, tools, and equipment used by the crew. Operate ground‑level equipment for hole digging, setting poles, placing anchors, grounding facilities, and stringing wire. Perform debris removal, tree grinding, and general site cleanup. Assist during emergency response events, outages, and call-back situations. Work extended hours and participate in frequent on-call, emergency standby, and call-back rotations as required. What You’ll Bring Working knowledge of safety rules, regulations, and procedures. Experience or familiarity with tools, equipment, and materials used in electric line construction and maintenance. Basic understanding of electrical principles and functions. Ability to follow written and verbal instructions accurately. Ability to respond quickly and efficiently in emergency situations. Clear communication skills, including accurate radio communication. Ability to work effectively with coworkers, contractors, and the public. Minimum Qualifications High school diploma or high school equivalency diploma required One (1) year of construction experience preferred Special Requirements Must possess/maintain a valid North Carolina Driver’s License. Must obtain and maintain a North Carolina Class A CDL within six (6) months of employment Physical Requirements Ability to perform the essential functions of the position, including physically demanding outdoor work.
