About The Position

The grounds employee has direct responsibility for the care, maintenance, protection and preservation of all areas affecting the outside conditions of school buildings, auxiliary buildings and surrounding grounds. The position requires the ability to operate and maintain heavy equipment including, but not limited to, loaders, large commercial mowers, forklifts and other heavy equipment. Background and experience in the operation and maintenance of snow removal equipment, four wheel drive trucks, tractors and light gasoline-powered equipment is preferred. Applicants may be expected to demonstrate their ability to operate any of the above equipment. This job will involve working at all building sites throughout the District. All applicants should be able to demonstrate an excellent work record, including good attendance, cooperative spirit, willingness to undertake and complete tasks assigned, and ability to work well with all school employees. Must be able to be properly licensed and insurable under district group policies as a regular driver of district vehicles and/or equipment.

Requirements

  • Must be able to be properly licensed and insurable under district group policies as a regular driver of district vehicles and/or equipment.
  • A commercial driver’s license (Class B with air brake endorsement) is preferred.
  • A commercial pesticide applicators license (Category 3a) is preferred, or must be acquired by the successful applicant at their expense.
  • The successful applicant must enroll in classes within four weeks of employment and must acquire the category 3a license within 9 months from their start date of employment.
  • Classes and testing may be taken during normal working hours.
  • Must be a high school graduate or have GED equivalent.
  • Maintains appropriate confidentiality.

  • Ability to learn and properly utilize various machines/equipment especially as machines/equipment are upgraded.

  • Ability to react well under pressure, handle and balance multiple demands at one time, work with frequent interruptions, and perform duties and tasks at expected levels of professionalism.
  • Ability to work independently with minimum supervision.

  • Ability to plan, coordinate and prioritize work effectively.
  • Ability to lift and/or move up to 50 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move more than 75 pounds.

Responsibilities

  • Mowing, trimming, fertilizing, improving and maintaining the District’s lawns, athletic fields, shrubbery and trees.
  • The application of herbicides and pesticides.
  • Repair and maintenance of fences, bleachers, playgrounds and athletic equipment.
  • The moving of the District’s equipment and furniture, mail route and warehouse duties, as assigned.
  • Operation and maintenance of all vehicles and equipment assigned to the grounds department
  • Performance of winter duties which include snow removal schedule.
  • Preparation of seed beds, planting and irrigation as directed.
  • All other duties as pertain to the job classification as assigned by the Manager of Skilled Trades and Grounds.
