The Groundskeeper I position at the University of Texas at Arlington involves routine semi-skilled work in the maintenance and care of lawns, plants, and flowers on the university grounds. The role is essential for ensuring the aesthetic and functional upkeep of outdoor spaces, contributing to the overall environment of the campus. The position requires physical labor and the ability to operate various grounds maintenance equipment.

  • Cuts grass using a hand mower or power mower.
  • Maintains lawns by planting, cultivating, and watering grass.
  • Cultivates, prunes, trims, transplants, fertilizes, and waters shrubbery, hedges, and trees.
  • Grades and prepares ground for planting, plants and maintains flower beds, removes leaves and rubbish from grounds.
  • Watches for pests, diseases, or other deteriorating agents, and cuts weeds and brush.
  • Keeps grounds clean and reports broken or leaking hydrants and faulty sprinkler system equipment.
  • Cleans and cares for tools, equipment, materials, and supplies used in grounds keeping.
  • Works in greenhouse and nursery, assisting in the maintenance of indoor plants.
  • Drives a UTA vehicle as needed.
  • Assists with other departmental activities when needed.
  • Valid Texas driver license.
  • Experience with reading and understanding verbal instructions.
  • Experience with and/or ability to learn operation of small equipment.
  • High School diploma or GED.
  • Knowledge of proper care for lawns, shrubs, etc.
  • Ability to operate tractors, cultivators, edgers, power mowers, and pesticide application equipment.
