About The Position

The position involves working under direction and requires a thorough knowledge of groundskeeping. The individual will act as a lead worker, providing work direction and training to lower-level workers and/or inmates in various groundskeeping tasks. These tasks include the propagation, grooming, maintenance, preparation, cultivation, and care for turf, lawns, trees, shrubs, and flowers. The role also includes participating in herbicidal spraying, removing, installing, and maintaining plant materials, and performing various maintenance tasks related to groundskeeping.

Requirements

  • Formal education in English and arithmetic including reading, writing, and speaking English, as well as knowledge of fractions, decimals, and percentages.
  • 12 months of training or 12 months of experience in groundskeeping activities and use of associated equipment.
  • Valid commercial driver's license required if motor equipment is of type and size regulated by sections 4506.01 and 4506.12 of Ohio revised code.
  • Alternatively, 6 months of experience as Groundskeeper 2.

Responsibilities

  • Act as lead worker over lower-level workers and/or inmates in groundskeeping tasks.
  • Participate in herbicidal spraying.
  • Remove, install, and maintain plant materials.
  • Prune, mulch, water, and apply insecticides, pesticides, and fertilizers.
  • Transplant trees and mow lawns.
  • Plant and prepare flower beds.
  • Remove trash and leaves from grounds and trim hedges.
  • Repair erosion problems.
  • Monitor lower-level workers or inmates in cleaning walks, roads, and parking areas.
  • Perform record keeping, documentation, and reporting tasks.
  • Order materials, supplies, and equipment.
  • Maintain records regarding care and planting of trees, shrubs, and flowers.
  • Inform supervisor of materials needed for planting.
  • Monitor subordinates and participate in maintenance and repair of equipment and machinery.
  • Assume duties of supervisor in their absence.
  • Inspect contract projects related to herbicidal spraying, tree removal, or turf fertilization.
  • Participate in the removal of dead animals.
  • Serve on institutional committees.
  • Attend training, seminars, and meetings as required.
  • Perform security functions as required.
